Windows 11 22H2 Moment 2 Update (Second Feature Drop) Available for Download

Microsoft has released the second major feature update for Windows 11 2022 Update (version 22H2) which comes with many new features such as improved Taskbar search, touch-optimized Taskbar for 2-in-1 devices, etc.

This new update is known as Moment 2 Update, Feature Drop 2 or February 2023 Update for Windows 11. You can also consider it as Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows 11 22H2.

The update is labelled as KB5022913 and changes Windows 11 build number to 22621.1344.

This update can be installed in all eligible devices which have been upgraded to recently released Windows 11 2022 Update or version 22H2. So first you’ll need to install or upgrade to Windows 11 2022 Update in your device and then you’ll be able to download this Moment 2 update in your device.

IMPORTANT: This new update has issues with popular customization software such as ExplorerPatcher, StartAllBack and Stardock’s Start11. If you are planning to install new Windows 11 update, make sure to uninstall these software otherwise your device may not start up. What’s New in Moment 2 Update or Feature Drop 2 for Windows 11

Following are the new features and changes present in Windows 11 Moment 2 Update as officially announced by Microsoft:

  • Improved typable search box experience on the Taskbar: When you start typing in the search box, search results now appear in the search flyout box. You can customize the new search experience by going to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar page. (How-to Guide)
  • Touch-optimized Taskbar for 2-in-1 devices: Now the Taskbar can be easily switched between 2 new states: Expanded or Collapsed. To switch between the two states, you need to just swipe up and down on the bottom of your computer screen. You can customize this feature using Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors page. There is a new option “Optimize taskbar for touch interactions when this device is used as a tablet” available to turn on/off this new behavior.
  • Improvements to Taskbar notification area: Now you can hover over and easily rearrange all icons in the notification area (system tray) including the “Show hidden icons” flyout menu.
  • Improvements to Task Manager including process filtering, more theme options and ability to disable confirmation dialogs when you turn on Efficiency mode.
  • Windows 11 now provides energy recommendations to help users in improving the energy efficiency of their PC and reducing carbon footprint. You can enable or disable this feature using Settings > System > Power & Battery > Energy Recommendations page.
  • Faster search and recommended local and cloud files in File Explorer.
  • Tabs support in Notepad.
  • This update improves the reliability of Windows after you install an update.
  • For devices that are joined to Azure Active Directory (AAD), Windows 11 now provides AI-powered recommended content (files) on Start Menu.
  • Windows Studio effects can be directly accessed using quick settings on the Taskbar to make it quick and easy to turn on and configure camera effects.
  • Quick Assist app is now available in Start menu’s All apps list to make it easier to get help if you are having PC issues.
  • This update adds the new Tamil Anjal keyboard for the Tamil language. To add it, make sure Tamil (Singapore), Tamil (Malaysia), Tamil (Sri Lanka), or Tamil (India) appears in Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region page.
  • Simplified sign-in for students via existing third-party providers (Windows 11 Pro Education, SE, and Education editions).
  • New accessibility features: Seamless switching between Narrator and other screen readers when using braille display. Also voice commands work across apps and File Explorer.
  • Snipping Tool enhancements: Built-in screen recorder with autosave functionality.
  • Improvements to voice access.
  • Now you can manage and access Cloud PCs using official Windows 365 app which is now generally available on Microsoft Store.
  • You can now link your iPhone mobile device directly to your Windows 11 PC using a new preview of Phone Link app for iOS.

What’s Fixed in Moment 2 Update or Feature Drop 2 for Windows 11

Following issues are fixed by Windows 11 Moment 2 Update:

  • Addresses a date information issue. It affects the format of dates sent between Windows and some versions of the Heimdal Kerberos library.
  • Addresses a reliability issue that occurs when you use Task View.
  • Addresses an issue that affects AppV. It stops file names from having the correct letter case (uppercase or lowercase).
  • Addresses an issue that affects Azure Active Directory (Azure AD). Using a provisioning package for bulk provisioning fails.
  • Addresses an issue that affects copying from a network to a local drive. Copying is slower than expected for some users.
  • Addresses an issue that affects File Explorer. When you use Shift+Tab or Shift+F6, the input focus does not move.
  • Addresses an issue that affects IE mode. The text on the status bar is not always visible.
  • Addresses an issue that affects Microsoft Edge. The issue removes conflicting policies for Microsoft Edge. This occurs when you set the MDMWinsOverGPFlag in a Microsoft Intune tenant and Intune detects a policy conflict.
  • Addresses an issue that affects parity virtual disks. Using Server Manager to create them fails.
  • Addresses an issue that affects provisioning packages. They fail to apply in certain circumstances when elevation is required.
  • Addresses an issue that affects the Color filters setting. When you select Inverted, the system sets it to Grayscale instead.
  • Addresses an issue that affects the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS). LSASS might stop responding. This occurs after you run Sysprep on a domain-joined machine.
  • Addresses an issue that affects the software keyboard. It does not appear in the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) after a Push-button reset (factory reset). This type of reset requires an external keyboard to be attached to provide credentials.
  • Addresses an issue that affects the user interface (UI). The volume up and volume down commands from a Bluetooth keyboard do not display.
  • Addresses an issue that affects Universal Print’s Configuration Service Provider (CSP). A command prompt window appears when you install a printer.
  • Addresses an issue that affects which folders appear in the Browse for Folder picker.
  • Addresses an issue that affects Xbox subscribers. If you buy an Xbox subscription using the “Redeem code” option, the Xbox subscription card does not appear on the Settings Accounts page. This issue occurs when recurring billing is off.
  • Addresses an issue that displays a blue screen during video playback. This occurs after you set high dynamic range (HDR) on your display.
  • Addresses an issue that might affect lsass.exe. It might stop responding. This occurs when it sends a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) query to a domain controller that has a very large LDAP filter.
  • Addresses an issue that might affect the touch keyboard and the PIN entry keyboard. You might not be able to use them to enter text when you sign in to your device.
  • Addresses compatibility issues that affect some printers. These printers use Windows Graphical Device Interface (GDI) printer drivers. These drivers do not completely adhere to GDI specifications.

Known Issues in Moment 2 Update or Feature Drop 2 for Windows 11

Following are the known issues present in Windows 11 Moment 2 Update:

  • After installing this update, Windows devices with some third-party UI customization apps might not start up. These third-party apps might cause errors with explorer.exe that might repeat multiple times in a loop. The known affected third-party UI customization apps are ExplorerPatcher, StartAllBack and Stardock’s Start11. It is recommended uninstalling any third-party UI customization app before installing this or later updates to prevent this issue.
  • Copying large multiple gigabyte (GB) files might take longer than expected to finish on Windows 11, version 22H2.
  • Using provisioning packages on Windows 11, version 22H2 (also called Windows 11 2022 Update) might not work as expected. Windows might only be partially configured, and the Out Of Box Experience might not finish or might restart unexpectedly.

As mentioned above, first make sure you are using the recently released Windows 11 2022 Update (version 22H2) in your computer and then you can download Moment 2 Update using following steps:

At the moment, Moment 2 Update is an optional non-security preview release which means interested users can manually download and install it by clicking on “Check for Updates” button present on Settings -> Windows Update page.

Microsoft will make the new update broadly available to all editions of Windows 11, version 22H2 next month using March 2023 monthly security update release.
