[Windows 10 Upgrade Fix] “Hybrid Laptops with Discrete GPU Connected to Display” Error Message

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

This error message is shown when people try to install a new version of Windows 10 in their computer systems. As we know Microsoft releases new Windows 10 feature updates via Windows Update and it’s automatically downloaded and installed in Windows 10 devices. Some users have reported that when the Update Assistant tries to upgrade their Windows 10 device to newer Windows 10 version, it throws following error message:

Some apps need to be uninstalled

These programs need to be uninstalled because they aren’t compatible with the upgrade.

The error message window also contains “Uninstall and continue” button and when the user clicks on the button, it shows another error message:

We couldn’t uninstall these apps

You’ll need to remove these apps yourself, and then select Refresh.

Recently an AskVG reader “Bilal Warraich” shared similar issue with us:

Bro Vishal, I am having an issue when I try to install Windows 10 April 2018 update. I get this “Hybrid laptop with discrete graphics uninstall” error message. When I click on the uninstall button, it tells me to do it manually. How can I fix this?

So basically the users can’t upgrade their Windows 10 computer to new Windows 10 feature update.

PROBLEM REASON:

This problem occurs on a specific brand computer machine i.e. Dell Alienware devices such as Alienware 13 R3, 15 R3, 15 R4, 17 R4, 17 R5 machines.

According to Microsoft, this error message appeared on various Dell Alienware devices. It happened because Microsoft was blocking these models from installing the feature update due to a known incompatibility issue which might cause these devices to display a black screen after resuming from battery saver mode.

The company says that the incompatibility issue has been resolved now and the block for these models has been removed.

PROBLEM SOLUTION:

The solution is very simple. You should try to upgrade your device again via Windows Update. Since the block has been removed by Microsoft, your device should not show any error message now and it should upgrade to newer Windows 10 version without any problem.

If the problem still persists, then you can try following steps:

STEP 1:

Open “Control Panel -> Programs and Features” page and uninstall all graphics card drivers (such as nVidia, etc) and related utilities.

STEP 2:

Also uninstall all Dell and Alienware tools such as Alienware Update, Digital Delivery, Command Center, etc.

STEP 3:

Now run the Update Assistant again and this time it should not throw any error message. Now your Windows 10 device will upgrade to new feature update successfully.

Alternatively, you can download Windows 10 standalone offline ISO file and upgrade your computer using the ISO file. You can download Windows 10 offline ISO file from following topics:
