[Windows 10 Fix] “The User Name or Password is Incorrect” Error Message After Restart

If you recently upgraded to Windows 10 newer version, you might be facing a very annoying problem. If you restart your machine, after boot screen an error message is shown “The user name or password is incorrect. Try again.“. The strange thing is that the error message is shown before Login Screen (also known as Sign-in Screen or Welcome Screen). So even if you didn’t enter any username or password, you get this error message first. Once you click on OK button, you get the Login Screen to enter correct user name and password and then Windows allows you to sign-in successfully.

Recently I received an email from a reader “Edy Medor” regarding similar problem. Here is the email content:

Since after installing Windows 10 Fall Creators update I am facing a very weird issue for which I don’t seem to find any solution anywhere. Whenever I restart/reboot my PC, the first screen that shows up even before the logon screen is:

“The user name or password is incorrect”.

How can that be, when I have not even had a chance to enter any user name or password. After clicking OK on the infamous message, then I will have the logon screen where I can enter my credentials (user name and password). After that, everything will go smooth.

The problem is nerve-racking, frustrating, freaking aggravating. I even changed my password but to no avail. I also ran a repair install with no luck either. Two temporary solutions I found didn’t appeal well to me.

  • netplwiz settings: Untick “User must enter a user name and password to use this computer” (I don’t want to leave my computer unprotected).
  • Enter the following command in Run box: shutdown /r /t 0 (I don’t want to do that every time I am restarting my PC).

I am wondering if you can help me resolve this issue, I would be so ever grateful.

Thanks in advance.

So you can see this issue is very frustrating as the user needs to click on OK button every time the computer is restarted.

Actually it happens due to a new feature added to Windows 10 newer versions which is called “Improved Boot Up Experience“. Microsoft has implemented a new functionality in Windows 10 newer versions which allows Windows to use your sign-in info to apply settings after a restart or update. This feature automatically finishes setting your Windows 10 device after an update is installed and your machine is restarted.

Here is the official explanation of this new feature according to Microsoft:

The advanced Windows Update feature to use your sign-in info to automatically finish setting your device after an update has been extended to regular reboots and shutdowns. When you log in and initiate a reboot or a shutdown through power options available on the Start Menu and various other locations, Windows will automatically setup your account after it has booted back up.

This will help you sign-in faster and will restore your accessibility applications and any other application that has registered for application restart.

If you remember this feature was added first to Windows 10 build 16251 and we told you about it in our exclusive Windows 10 Fall Creators Update changelog topic.

If you are facing problem due to this new feature and want to disable it, the solution is very simple!

Microsoft has provided an option to enable/disable this feature. You just need to use following steps to turn off this new feature so that you don’t get “The user name or password is incorrect” error message at startup:

1. Open Settings app from Start Menu. Alternatively, you can press WIN+I keys together to open Settings directly.

2. Now click on Accounts icon in Settings app and then click on Sign-in Options tab present in left-side pane.

PS: Alternatively, You can directly launch this page using “ms-settings:signinoptions” command in RUN dialog box as mentioned here.

3. Scroll down to bottom and you’ll see “Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device after an update or restart” option. This option would be set to ON.

PS: In newer Windows 10 versions, the option label has been changed to “Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device and reopen my apps after an update or restart“. Now the new option also prevents Windows from restoring applications at system startup.

Click on the toggle button and set this option to OFF.

That’s it. Now restart your computer and you’ll never see the irritating error message about incorrect username or password unless of course you manually enter a wrong password.

  1. I have a windows 10 pro machine on a network and it is constantly giving the “incorrect password” error for any network login I give. I can log into the machine using a local admin login, and I can see that it is connected to the domain, but if I try to switch user or reboot, no matter what network ID I use, it always returns “incorrect password”

  2. I have all of the above problems. Get the error disk is not a password reset disk. I have put in 3 different usb disks and get the same problem. So as others have stated I can only get to the screen before my logon occurs. Now I am in the constant loop “automatic repair” and the only option that will work to start a boot up is f8. None of the others do nothing not even safe mode. All this has started since the wonderful updates, Cumulative, which will not install. Very good job by microsoft to make things easier for us. Between Dell and Microsoft I will probably end up in the insane asylum.

  3. Mine still asks…it started after once i entered wrong microsoft password in chrome’s password manager….any help!?

  4. Hi VG, I have exactly the problem described but can’t apply your fix because the user account has been deleted. Any ideas?
Here’s my situation. I’m cleaning up a laptop for sale. Has Windows 10 Home ver 1903 build 18362.295. It has only ever had one user, local administrator account Kathy. I added a new user, alpha, changed it to administrator, then deleted user account Kathy. On power up it still shows on the welcome screen Kathy and “User name or password incorrect”. If I click on OK it lists both users alpha and Kathy on lower left corner, I can select alpha and login is OK. Or if I just wait till the screen saver activates, it shows just user alpha and I can login OK.
How can I remove Kathy from the welcome screen? I have turned OFF “Use my sign in info to automatically etc” in the administrator account alpha but that has no effect on deleted account Kathy.
    Thanks.

  5. ^^ Type compmgmt.msc in RUN and press Enter. Now click on Local Users and Groups -> Users. In right-side pane, delete Kathy user.

  6. Thanks for your rapid response. But sorry, your fix didn’t work. I typed compmgmt.msc in RUN, and pressed Enter but the Computer Management screen does not list Local Users and Groups. It just has System Tools, Storage and Services and Applications. Another idea?
    Thank you, David

  7. Thanks again for your rapid response. I had already looked through the entire menu tree without finding Local Users and Groups. When I expand System Tools I see only these 5 items :
    Task Scheduler
    Event Viewer
    Shared Folders
    Performance
    Device Manager
I’ve poked around in each one but can’t find Local Users and Groups.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks, David

  8. ^^ Open RUN dialog box, paste following and press Enter:

    explorer.exe shell:::{60632754-C523-4B62-B45C-4172DA012619}”

Now click on Manage another account. Now select desired account and delete it.

  9. Followed your instructions but again it did not solve my problem. Let me restate it:-
Laptop running Windows 10 ver 1903 Build 18362.295.
It only ever had one local user admin account “Kathy”.
Preparing it for sale, added new local admin account “alpha” using Control Panel section User Accounts. Then deleted user account “Kathy”.
Rebooted. Welcome screen shows “Kathy” the user name or password is incorrect. Try again. And a box showing OK.
I have taken two routes at this point.
    1. I can click on the OK box, and the screen now lists both “alpha” and “Kathy” at the lower left corner, in addition to the user & pw login boxes. I can select the account “alpha”, login and all is fine.
    2. If I do nothing and wait for the screensaver to show, the new welcome screen correctly lists “alpha” and again I can login and all is well.
But after a warm or cold restart, the first welcome screen still lists only “Kathy” even though that user account has been deleted.
How can I remove that annoying last trace of Kathy.
    Thank you for your help.
    David

  10. ^^ Type netplwiz in RUN dialog box and press Enter. Now check whether Kathy is present in accounts list?

  11. Repeating my response as no reply posted – maybe I forgot to press Submit.

Typed netplwiz in RUN dialog box, pressed Enter.
User Accounts window appeared with two tabs Users, Advanced.
    Users tab shows
    Users for this computer:
    HomeGroupUser$ HomeUsers
    user1 Administrators; Users

user1 was the first name used for the new administrator account, subsequently changed to alpha in an unsuccessful attempt to get it to show on the Welcome screen before Kathy.

  12. ^^ I can suggest following last thing:

Open regedit and go to following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Create new key under Winlogon and set its name as SpecialAccounts

Again create new key under SpecialAccounts and set its name as UserList

Select UserList key and in right-side pane create new DWORD and set its name as Kathy

Now restart your computer and it should remove the user account from welcome screen.

  13. Thanks for the latest fix. I read up on how to edit the registry, backed it up, got brave and applied your recommended fix. Had no problems doing my first regedit. The DWORD with value set as Kathy now appears on a line below the default REG_SZ (Value not set). But after reboot it did not fix the problem. The welcome screen still comes up to the old deleted account showing “Kathy, User name or password incorrect. Try again”. Clicking on OK still reveals both “Kathy” and user account “alpha” on the bottom left corner from where I can login. In the control panel the only account listed is Local User Administrator “alpha”. Any more ideas?

  14. It showing my password is incorrect in my laptop but I can access my account on my mobile with same password.
    Help me help me

  15. Typed control userpasswords2 into RUN dialog box as instructed.
User Accounts window comes up listing:
    User Name Group
    HomeGroupUser$ HomeUsers
    user1 Administrators; Users

user1 was a Local Administrator Account created in addition to Kathy. Administrator Account Kathy was then deleted. The name user1 was later changed to alpha in an attempt to get it listed first on the welcome screen.

    Thanks for your continued help.

  16. ^^ I can advise only to create a new user account and delete existing account. It seems the previous account is present somewhere in cache and showing on screen.

  17. Thank you for your persistence during many rounds of dialog. I just hate to lose a “battle” with Windows!

  18. i cant get past the login page when entering password tells me incorrect thats it i cant go in and fix it nothing stuck help.

  19. Similar/Same problem. I touch the power button and I am greeted with a one-color screen, a box in which to place my password, and at the lower right, a small graphic that is labeled internet which is next to another graphic labeled ease of access.

It doesn’t see any of my networks (There are 3 but only one machine is affected). It actually thinks it’s in airplane mode and trying to change it doesn’t do anything.

The affected unit has all my videos concerning my guitar repair business and I add more all the time.

The ease of access button isn’t complete, missing some of the options.

And, there’s no power button to the right of those 2.

I’ve tried every password I’ve used on the computer since I bought it (2009) and none work.

I’ve tried to boot from a CD, a DVD in order to reset or eliminate the password; nothing works. Every attempt returns me to the password box. Problem started when the update was 25% into the process. Anyone withe a helpful hint will be appreciated.

  20. ^^ What is the username selected? Is it your previous username? Also try to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys.

  21. hey…i updated my windows 10 to pro version but since then i have got a problem about my account info…you know, every time i turn the pc on i just enter my old password and it accepts it correctly but when i want to change my password and enter my current pass in settings it says the pass is incorrect while it works on the windows desktop!please tell the the solution it just makes me madddddd.

  22. Yea but what if I DON’T WANT my windows to “Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device and reopen my apps after an update or restart”…

I don’t want all that what that option says, all I want is to get rid of the sign in screen at all, just login without password or pin. I don’t want anything else to be done. What’s the solution then?

  23. Here’s what mine is doing…. Goes right to “The Password is incorrect. Try again.” When i click “Ok”, it blinks and goes back to the same error. No chance to enter the password, ever. If I do this repeatedly, of course, I get the circle delay, it STILL goes back to the same error.

    Has this been resolved?

    Thanks!
