[Windows 10 Bug] Settings Page to Add / Remove Icons in Left-Side Toolbar of Start Menu is Broken

We have shared many Windows 10 bugs in past like Internet Explorer pointing to classic Windows Update executable (which has been fixed in newer Windows 10 versions), second count display bug on Lock Screen, etc.

Now it’s turn of another bug which has been introduced in the recently released Windows 10 April 2018 Update. Just now I installed the new feature update in one my machines and discovered this annoying bug. It was a clean installation, no upgrade. Also no setting was changed, complete fresh Windows 10 installation.

This bug is related to Windows 10 Start Menu. When you open Start Menu, you see a tiny vertical toolbar present at the left-side of Start Menu which shows power options, user account options, Settings icon, etc.

In the new April 2018 Update, Microsoft has added 2 new icons to the toolbar which are Documents and Pictures. These 2 new shortcuts are now also visible in Start Menu by default in April 2018 Update. This change was made in Windows 10 Insider Preview build 17074 when April 2018 Update was under development and testing. You can check the changes list in our exclusive April 2018 Update changelog topic. Microsoft added the 2 new shortcuts of Documents and Pictures folders to Start Menu left-side toolbar in that build.

Now the bug appears when we try to remove these new icons or add other icons to the toolbar. Microsoft allows Windows 10 users to add/remove icons from Start Menu left-side toolbar using Settings app. You can go to Settings -> Personalization -> Start page and then click on “Choose which folders appear on Start” link present in right-side pane.

PS: In April 2018 Update, Microsoft has added a direct shortcut to open this page. Just right-click on an icon present in Start Menu left-side toolbar and you’ll get “Personalize this list” option. Click on it and it’ll launch the page to turn on/off shortcut icons.

It opens a new page which contains toggle buttons to show/hide various shortcut icons in Start Menu left-side toolbar such as File Explorer, Settings, Documents, Pictures, Music, etc.

You can check following tutorial to learn more about it:

[Tip] Add “This PC” Shortcut to Windows 10 Start Menu

Now in April 2018 Update, when we go to this page to remove Documents, Pictures or Settings icons or add new icons, it doesn’t work at all. Even if we set the toggle buttons to OFF to remove these icons from Start Menu, it doesn’t remove them. Same case happens when we set toggle buttons of other icons to ON to add them to Start Menu. It doesn’t add any new icon to Start Menu.

Following screenshot shows that I have enabled File Explorer shortcut and disabled Settings, Documents shortcuts but still there are no changes in Start Menu. File Explorer icon is not visible and Documents, Settings icons are still available:

So basically the Settings page to add/remove shortcuts to Start Menu left-side toolbar is broken in April 2018 Update. It doesn’t work in adding/removing icons on Start Menu.

I have created a video showing this bug in action. Check out following video:

If you install April 2018 Update in your computer, check this bug and let me know whether it appears in your machine.

  1. VG its working fine here. Did you change time zone on your PC? If yes then wait for 12-24 hour. It’ll be fixed automatically

  2. ^^ What’s the relation between this bug and time zone? I didn’t change any time zone. Did you read somewhere about this bug?

  3. I faced similar issue in windows 10 v 1709. I wasn’t able to customise start menu. Then I read this “Changing system time completely breaks start menu functionality”. So, I waited for 12 hrs and start menu starts working properly. I did change the time zone.
I’ve tested this with 2-3 clean install of windows 10 all same issue.

You can create new user account or use hidden administrator account. I guess your start menu will work properly.

  4. Hey VG.
Seams it works if you upgrade from 1709. I just removed everything from that page in settings and now I only have my user name and power button in start menu left side. My install is an upgrade from 1709.
BTW the input indicator bug is somehow present in 1803 again.

  5. But I do face some issues with the explorer.exe, which it keep restarting itself without any notice.

  6. I found a bug in the settings app.
It seems like if you access the battery menu directly through battery icon from the notification bar and click on home, the back button will be bugged out.
