What is IEMonitor.exe Process Running in Task Manager? How to Disable it?

When we posted tutorial to install IDM Integration Module extension in all web browsers, many IDM users contacted us regarding another IDM related issue which is disabling IEMonitor.exe process in IDM.

If you use the popular download management software called IDM (Internet Download Manager) in your Windows computer or if you installed this software in your system and forgot it, you might have noticed a strange process called “IEMonitor.exe” running in Task Manager.

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc keys together to launch Task Manager and then check for IEMonitor.exe process in Processes or Details tab.

Sometimes people consider it as a virus or malware and want to remove it from their computer but no antivirus or security software detects it as suspicious program, so users are unable to delete it from their computers.

What is IEMonitor.exe Process and What does it Do?

If you also have this process running in Task Manager, don’t worry! It is not a virus or dangerous program. This process is related to Internet Download Manager software.

If you check its description in Task Manager, it states “Internet Download Manager agent for click monitoring in IE-based browsers“. So basically it’s a part of IDM software to monitor IE-based web browsers such as AOL, MSN, Avant, Maxthon, etc. This IDM module keeps running in background so that IDM can detect downloadable items in IE-based browsers and can take over the downloads from the browsers. This extra module helps IDM in downloading files from IE-based browsers automatically for the users.

Where is IEMonitor.exe Executable File Stored?

IEMonitor.exe file is present in following location where all IDM program files are stored:

In 64-bit Windows versions:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Download Manager

In 32-bit Windows versions:

C:\Program Files\Internet Download Manager

So don’t worry about this process.

How to Disable or Remove IEMonitor.exe Process?

Sometimes this process may cause high CPU usage and disk usage issue. Sometimes it starts consuming too much RAM and may slow down your computer.

If you also face this problem and want to disable or remove IEMonitor.exe process running in Task Manager from your computer permanently, following steps will help you.

Actually IDM allows users to disable IEMonitor.exe process in their computers. You can turn off this module using IDM settings and it’ll stop running in background and you’ll no longer notice it in Task Manager.

Following steps will help you in disabling IEMonitor.exe process in your computer:

1. Open Internet Download Manager and click on Downloads -> Options menu.

2. In General tab, look for following option:

Run module for monitoring in IE-based browsers (AOL, MSN, Avant, etc)

This option is enabled by default, that’s why you see IEMonitor.exe process in Task Manager.

To get rid of IEMonitor.exe process, disable this option i.e. uncheck it.

Click on OK button and you have successfully removed IEMonitor.exe process running in your computer.
