[Tip] Restore Pop-up Window Blocked Notification Message in Mozilla Firefox

All web browsers come with pop-up blocker feature which automatically blocks unwanted pop-up windows. This useful feature prevents websites from opening annoying pop-up windows which usually contain advertisements and sometimes malicious malware too.

Mozilla Firefox also comes with a built-in pop-up blocking tool which blocks pop-up windows but its not perfect and doesn’t block all kind of pop-ups. To make it fully functional and perfect, you need to modify a preference present in the hidden secret advanced configuration page i.e. about:config page. You can read the full guide at following link:

When Mozilla Firefox blocks pop-up windows, it shows a message at the top of the web page in form of a notification bar. The notification message tells you that “Firefox prevented this site from opening a pop-up window” as shown in following screenshot:

The message bar also contains an “Options” button which lets you open the blocked pop-up window and whitelist the website so that it can always open pop-up windows.

The “Options” button in notification bar also contains an option “Don’t show this message when pop-ups are blocked“. It can be used to disable the notification bar. Now if you accidentally or intentionally clicked on this option, Firefox will never show any notification message if a pop-up window is blocked on a website.

There is no option provided to restore the notification message so if you decide to enable the notification message again, you are out of luck.

Don’t worry! The notification message can be restored by modifying another preference present in about:config page.

So if you disabled the pop-up window blocked notification message in Firefox and want to restore it, following steps will help you:

1. Open Mozilla Firefox and type about:config in the addressbar and press Enter. It’ll show you a warning message, click on “I accept the risk!” button.

2. Now type popups in Search filter box and it’ll show following preference in the window:

privacy.popups.showBrowserMessage

3. This preference would be set to false i.e. disabled. To re-enable the notification message, double-click on privacy.popups.showBrowserMessage preference and change its value to true. Alternatively, you can right-click on the preference and select Toggle option.
