[Tip] Restore Classic Print Preview Dialog Box in Chrome and Microsoft Edge

If you want to disable modern Print Preview UI and enable classic Print Preview dialog box in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge web browsers, this article will help you.

Recently while discussing about restoring classic Print Preview dialog box in Mozilla Firefox browser (more info), a reader asked me following question:

Is it possible to restore this classic Print Preview dialog in Chromium-based browsers like Chrome and Edge?

Actually Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers also come with a modern redesigned Print Preview UI similar to Firefox and these browsers use this new modern UI by default instead of the system Print Preview dialog box.

Following screenshots show new modern Print Preview UI present in Chrome and Edge browsers:

Although both these browsers provide a shortcut link to launch classic Print Preview dialog box in the modern UI. In fact, users can direct launch system Print Preview dialog box in Chrome and Edge by pressing Ctrl+Shift+P keys together.

Some people want to force Chrome and Edge browsers to always use system’s classic Print Preview dialog box instead of the default modern Print Preview UI.

Fortunately, it’s possible to disable modern Print Preview UI and enable classic Print Preview dialog box in both Chrome and Edge browsers. There is a hidden secret command-line parameter which can be used to always use classic Print Preview dialog box in these web browsers.

If you also want to bring back classic Print Preview dialog box in Chrome and Edge browsers, following steps will help you:

The secret parameter is “--disable-print-preview” which can be used in both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge web browsers. You just need to add this parameter to these browsers shortcuts to force them to use classic Print Preview dialog box as mentioned below:

1. Right-click on Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome shortcut on Desktop and select Properties option. If the browser shortcut is pinned to Taskbar, right-click on it and again right-click on browse’s name present on the jumplist and select Properties option.

If you launch Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome from Start Menu, copy and paste following string in RUN dialog box and press Enter key:

%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

It’ll open Programs folder in File Explorer which contains Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome shortcut. Right-click on it and select Properties option.

2. Once you open browser’s properties box, append following string at the end of the text string present in Target field:

--disable-print-preview

Remember there must be a blank space between existing text string and the appended string.

3. Apply the changes and launch Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome using the shortcut.

That’s it. Now your web browser will always use classic Print Preview dialog box.

PS: In future, if you decide to restore default settings and enable modern Print Preview UI, delete the new extra text string from Target field in shortcut’s properties and save the changes.

NOTE: If you are already using another “–disable-features” or “–enable-features” parameter in Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome shortcut, following article will help you in using more than one “–disable-features” or “–enable-features” parameter in properties:

BONUS TIP: If you don’t want to create or modify shortcut to always launch Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge with classic Print Preview dialog box but want a way to quickly launch Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge with classic Print Preview box enabled whenever you want, you can use following commands in RUN dialog box (WIN+R):

chrome.exe --disable-print-preview

msedge.exe --disable-print-preview

It’ll launch Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers with classic Print Preview dialog box enabled whenever you execute this command.

  1. Sadly it appears this fix doesn’t work on a new install of Edge Windows 11. Though it works on my old W10 computer (that computer is about ready to be retired)
