[Tip] Remove Tabs Search (Arrow Button) from Firefox Title Bar

If you upgraded to Firefox 106 or later versions, you might have immediately noticed that the Tabs Search icon (small drop-down arrow button) is now always visible in Firefox title bar near the minimize/close buttons as shown in following screenshot:

Even if you have opened a single tab, the Tabs Search icon is still visible in Firefox title bar or tab bar.

The Tabs Search feature comes handy when you have opened several tabs and it’s hard to find a particular tab. You can click on the drop-down arrow button to access Tabs Search feature. It displays a list of all running tabs to select any desired tab. You can also search for a particular tab using the same feature.

Tabs Search feature is also known as Tab Manager in Firefox. The same feature is also present in popular Google Chrome web browser.

Some Firefox users may not like the new behavior of Tabs Search button and may want to remove the button from Firefox title bar.

Fortunately it’s very easy to disable or remove the Tabs Search icon or button from Firefox toolbar.

Mozilla team has provided a hidden secret preference or flag to get rid of the Tabs Search arrow button from Firefox title bar.

Following steps will help you in disabling and removing Tabs Search icon in your Firefox web browser:

1. Open Firefox and type about:config in the addressbar and press Enter. It’ll show you a warning message, click on “Accept the Risk and Continue” button. It’ll open Firefox’s hidden secret advanced configuration page i.e. about:config page.

  1. Thanks! This was especially annoying because the search arrow literally created a new bar for me.

  2. Not working with Firefox 106, tried about:config, user.js and even group policy (“settings” policy).
Btw. the button is only visible in the first window of a browser session.

  3. The solution is working in latest version of Firefox without any issue. Make sure to restart Firefox to apply changes.

  4. People need to stop saying it works without specifying an actual version. This used to work and now it no longer works. I’m on version 109. I have 3 browser windows open and as noticed by another user here, the arrow is present on the first window, not the rest.

  5. ^^ It’s working perfectly on the latest 109.0 version on all machines here. Make sure to restart Firefox. If you don’t restart Firefox, the Arrow will not disappear.

PS: Also the Tab manager arrow will automatically appear if there are many tabs opened and the tab bar has not sufficient space to show all of them.
