[Tip] Remove Keyboard Icon from Notification Bar While Typing in Mobile Phone
Recently after a software/firmware update, I noticed that suddenly my Samsung Galaxy smartphone started showing a small “Keyboard” icon in top notification bar whenever I type something inside any app.
For example, if I start typing in WhatsApp, Messages, Notes or any other app, the mobile phone immediately starts displaying a tiny Keyboard icon in notification bar (or status bar). Following screenshot shows the Keyboard icon present in notification bar while typing in Notes app:

Although no problem occurs due to this Keyboard icon addition but sometimes the icon might irritate a few people specially those who like clean and uncluttered UI.
I found that the Keyboard icon is added by “Virtual Keyboard” feature present in Android system. It’s shown to allow user to select Input method such as Google voice typing, Samsung keyboard, etc.
Fortunately it’s possible to get rid of the unnecessary Keyboard icon.
If you don’t like the new Keyboard icon randomly showing in notification bar in your Android mobile phone, following steps will help you in disabling or removing the icon from notification bar:
1. Open any app such as Messages and start typing. The Keyboard icon will appear in notification bar.
2. Swipe down notification bar and you’ll see following notification related to the Keyboard icon:
Android System

Choose input method
Samsung Keyboard
3. Press and hold (long press) on the notification and you’ll get a toggle button to turn off the notification. Set the toggle button to OFF i.e. disable it.
At last tap on Save button and the Keyboard icon will disappear forever.
Now type anything in any app and the Keyboard icon will no longer display in notification bar.
NOTE: There is another method to disable Keyboard icon if you can’t use the above mentioned method:
1. Open All Apps screen or open Settings page in your mobile phone.
2. Now tap inside the Search box and type Android System and tap on search button to search for the term.
3. You’ll see following two results listed under App Info section in search result:
- Android System WebView
- Android System
4. Tap on Android System, it’ll open Android System app info page. Tap on Notifications option. Now look for Virtual keyboard option listed on the page. The option should be present at the bottom of the list.
Now set the toggle button given next to Virtual keyboard to OFF.
That’s it. It’ll permanently remove Keyboard icon from notification bar in your mobile phone.
