[Tip] New Way to Install and Use Google Chrome Themes in Microsoft Edge

We know that Microsoft Edge web browser supports Google Chrome extensions/add-ons and we can install and use Chrome extensions in Microsoft Edge from Chrome Web Store as mentioned in following tutorial:

By default, Microsoft Edge doesn’t allow users to install and use Google Chrome themes. Some time back, we shared a tutorial to force Microsoft Edge to support Google Chrome themes. With the help of a command-line parameter, we were able to apply and use Chrome themes in Microsoft Edge. You can check out following article for details:

[Tip] How to Install Google Chrome Themes in Microsoft Edge

Now newer versions of Microsoft Edge web browser come with a hidden preference/flag which can be enabled to install and use Google Chrome themes without adding any command-line parameter.

You just need to turn on a preference/flag and you’ll be able to directly add and use Google Chrome themes in Microsoft Edge without any problem or error message.

We told you about this trick in UPDATE 14 in our exclusive Microsoft Edge Canary Updates topic when Microsoft Edge 82.0 was under development and testing phase.

Following screenshot shows Microsoft Edge Using Google Chrome’s “High Contrast Colorful” theme downloaded and installed via Chrome Web Store:

If you also want to install and use Google Chrome themes in Microsoft Edge, following steps will help you:

1. Open Microsoft Edge web browser and type edge://flags/ in addressbar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration or experiments page.

2. Now type themes in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

Allow installation of external store themes
Turn this on to allow themes from external web stores to be installed in Microsoft Edge. – Mac, Windows

3. To enable support for Chrome themes, select Enabled for Allow installation of external store themes option from the drop-down box.

4. Microsoft Edge will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Restart” button to restart Microsoft Edge.

That’s it. You have enabled Google Chrome themes support in Microsoft Edge web browser.

5. Now open Google Chrome Web Store Themes page and open any desired theme.

Click on “Add to Chrome” button and the theme will be installed and applied to Microsoft Edge browser without any problem.

NOTE: You can remove installed theme and restore default Microsoft Edge theme by opening Edge Settings, going to Appearance section and clicking on Remove button given next to Custom Theme option in right-side pane.
