[Tip] Keep Using Truecaller’s Caller ID Feature but Disable SMS Messaging Support

Truecaller is one of the most popular and widely used Caller ID apps for Android mobile phones and Apple iPhones. Many people use Truecaller in their smartphones to block spam calls automatically and know the caller name if the mobile number is not saved in their phonebook.

Truecaller app helps in identifying genuine or spam calls in advance before attending the incoming calls. If we receive a new call from unknown number which is not stored in our contacts list, it shows the caller name using its huge database which helps us in knowing who is actually calling us.

Truecaller takes over the default or stock Phone as well as SMS messaging apps and sets itself as the default Phone and SMS app so that it can identify and block spam calls and messages.

There is no harm in using Truecaller as default Phone or dialer app as it can identify incoming and outgoing mobile numbers but we should be very careful while using Truecaller as default SMS app.

Lots of people regularly receive important messages from offices, banks, etc. Many times we receive OTP from email services, banks, etc to login to their websites and make transactions. So using a 3rd party app to send/receive these kind of confidential messages might be little bit risky.

We don’t know where our messages are getting stored and how are they identifying these messages for filtering as genuine or spam.

Personally I use Truecaller as default Phone app only to take benefit of its caller ID feature. At the same time, I turn off its SMS messaging support and I use the built-in or stock messaging app to send/receive SMS.

In this article, I’ll tell you how to use Truecaller as default Phone app to enjoy its caller ID feature but disable or remove its SMS support.

If you also use Truecaller app in your mobile phone and want to turn off its messaging support to improve privacy, following steps will help you:

That’s it. You have successfully disabled SMS messaging support in Truecaller and now your mobile phone will prevent or restrict Truecaller from accessing your future SMS.

Now launch Truecaller app. If it shows a notification that Truecaller is not default SMS app, ignore the notification and tap on Dismiss option to remove the notification.

Now you can keep using Truecaller’s caller ID feature along with the stock Messaging app to read/write SMS.

PS: I haven’t checked but this trick should also disable Truecaller’s personal Chat feature.
