[Tip] How to Try New Redesigned Gmail Interface (UI)

Recently there were news that Google is going to launch a new refreshing and redesigned interface (UI) for Gmail. Almost all of us have Gmail account and we all know that Google hasn’t changed the look-n-feel of Gmail since years, so people were very excited after hearing the news and were desperately waiting for the new interface to try.

Finally the day has come. Today Google launched the new Gmail interface which is available for all Gmail users. Since the UI update is rolling out in phases, some Gmail users might not have received the new UI yet. Wait for a few hours or days and it’ll be available for everyone.

The new Gmail UI is not enabled automatically. You need to activate it manually using following steps:

PS: If you can’t see the option, it means the UI update has not been made available for your account or region. As mentioned above, you’ll need to wait for some time and it’ll become available very soon.

As soon as you click on “Try the new Gmail” option, the new Gmail UI starts loading. You get the new Gmail logo in the middle of loading page with the progress bar.

Once the new Gmail UI is activated, Gmail shows you a welcome screen telling you about the fresh new look. You are also asked to select the “Display Density” which is set to Default. Other choices which are available to select are Comfortable and Compact. You can change the display density later as well.

After completing the setup wizard, you get the new redesigned Gmail interface with material design which looks very refreshing, clean and modern.

The fonts, buttons, labels, icons, everything has been changed. You’ll notice that the Google logo has been replaced by the new Gmail logo.

A new sidebar is also shown at the right-side of the screen which contains add-ons like Calendar, Keep and Tasks. You can add more add-ons to the sidebar by clicking on the Plus ‘+’ icon.

The nice and very useful addition is the quick actions which appear when you hover mouse cursor over emails. You get options such as Archive, Delete, Mark as read/unread and Snooze.

The new UI also comes with an excellent security feature called “Confidential Mode” which allows users to remove the options to forward, copy, download or print email messages. It might become very useful feature if you need to send sensitive information via email. You can also set expiry time for email messages. Once an email message expires, the receiver will not be able to view the email message content.

  1. Personally I do not like the new UI. Even after adjusting display density to Compact and the text size to small unread messages seem to take up a lot more room on the screen and there is also more whitespace between the lines.

I cringed when I saw the rumor several weeks ago about senders being able to put a time limit on messages that they sent you after which they disappear.

I found no way to access Contacts unless you compose and email and click on the To field and then scroll through the list of email addresses.

I also have been using a Google Labs applet call “Google Calendar gadget”. This applet allowed me to see multiple calendars in the lower left sidebar so I could quickly glance at 2 different calendars with ease. Now there is no way of seeing these external calendars even with the flyout in the new right hand side bar, With the new UI all the Google Labs stuff is no longer available.

I reverted my Gmail accounts back to the old UI.
