[Tip] How to Restore “View Image” Option to Context Menu in Mozilla Firefox

This article will help you in getting back the removed “View Image” option when you right-click on an image on a web page in Mozilla Firefox web browser.

Many Firefox users who upgraded to recently released Firefox version 88, noticed that the “View Image” option is missing in image context menu.

In older versions of Firefox browser, users were able to view any image present on a web page in same tab by just right-clicking on the image and selecting “View Image” option from the context menu as shown in following screenshot:

Now Mozilla has removed the “View Image” option from right-click menu in version 88 and later. Actually the “View Image” option has been replaced by a new “Open Image in New Tab” option. Now if users right-click on an image on a web page, they see “Open Image in New Tab” option present in context menu in place of “View Image” option as shown in following screenshot:

The problem with the new “Open Image in New Tab” option is that it opens the selected image in a new tab. On the other hand, the classic “View Image” option used to open the image in same tab.

Now many Firefox users are missing the good ol’ “View Image” option. They prefer opening the image in same tab. People are demanding that Mozilla should add another “Open Image in Same Tab” option to image context menu which will work similar to previous “View Image” option.

In my opinion, Mozilla should have provided a preference/flag in Firefox Options page or about:config page to restore “View Image” option or to replace “Open Image in Same Tab” option with old “View Image” option.

Unfortunately, there seems no way to bring back “View Image” option in Firefox unless we use 3rd party extensions/addons.

Fortunately, there is an extension available for Firefox which can add the missing “View Image” option to right-click menu. The extension is named as “View Image Context Menu Item” and does the job perfectly.

Following screenshot shows “View Image” option back in image context menu with the help of the extension:

If you also want to restore “View Image” option to image context menu in Firefox, download and install the extension from following link:

Open the page in Firefox and click on “Add to Firefox button”. Firefox will ask for permission, click on “Add” button.

That’s it. It’ll immediately restore the deleted “View Image” option to images context menu in Firefox web browser. Now try to right-click on an image and you’ll see “View Image” option back in context menu.

The only difference between old “View Image” and this new “View Image” option added by the extension is the placement. Default option was used to show on the top of the context menu. On the other hand, the new option added by the extension displays at the bottom of the context menu. But it shouldn’t matter a lot, at least we got the option back.

  1. You could always open the image in a new tab with ctrl+click or middle click on the view image menu option. Now instead of having a choice you don’t.

  2. Downloaded both apps (anton g, and Joshua b) available to restore the view image option to the right click context menu. Neither app works (Windows 10, Firefox 88.0.1). Both apps claim to instantly restore this option but nothing happens.
Can anyone offer a working solution?

  3. Getting so tired of Firefox Mozilla developers being apparently incapable of furnishing a finished product.

Note to the tech people, please take a very very long vacation and learn to provide a finished product. You can feel free to add functions, but should be advised to never ever remove any function.

Changes should be optional, not mandatory. Good ideas do not require force. Another Mozilla fail. We have used view image on a daily basis for years. And every time we need to set up a new computer or refresh our Firefox, it takes many hours to recreate the original function. What a complete waste of time. Pretty tired of tech people ruining the usability of their own products to justify continued employment.

Tech in 2021; Remove all the valuable functions. Prepare a ‘new product’. Charge for the same previously freely available features. Tech systems illusions, unethical and cowardly. Where is our cross platform compatibility, faster speeds, fewer advertisements, elimination of commercial company influences? Where is the open source? Tech people should be removed from the equation at this point, we barely even need their services anymore. The majority of tech products available to humans are already highly functional and near perfect. Well, they were, before they engaged in a system of PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE to justify additional sales and employment costs.

  4. I’ve tried all methods on the web to restore the View Image function to Firefox – NONE OF THEM WORK…. including THIS ONE!

Why do programmers remove the functions that people actually use and leave the ones that no one wants?
