All web browsers come with a hidden secret advanced configuration page to customize and control web browser functionality. We told you about these secret pages long time back in following tutorial:

[Tip] Access Hidden Secret Configuration Page in Your Web Browser

If you upgraded or installed newer versions of Mozilla Firefox web browser, you might have noticed a brand new About:Config page as shown in following screenshot:

By default, it doesn’t show any preference and we need to click on “Show All” link to get a list of all available preferences. The new About:Config page also shows “Changing these preferences can impact Firefox performance or security” message on the main page.

When you access all available preferences by clicking on “Show All” link, you’ll notice that now the preferences are shown in larger fonts and take more screen space as shown in following screenshot:

  1. Absolutely HORRENDOUS ‘update’, dumbed down, tabletized clunky sluggish garbge, designed for finger pointing on phones!!!!.

    AWFUL!!!!!!!

  2. Please include the version number 73.0 near the start of the article!
    .
I agree, this dumbed down version s**ks! I’m not a smart phone, I want to see the extra columns they (dis)”improved” out
    .
If they wanted to “improve” it, why couldn’t they include the old info and add an OS check. For “smartphones” present the dumbed down version. For desktop present the full thing.
    .
It would also be nice if they made accessing the old one easier. How about a shortcut like
    About:config.old
    .

  3. @Vishal:

Is there still a way to open Firefox ‘Library’ in a tab?

    chrome://browser/content/places/places.xul

  4. @Vishal:
    Thank You very much! 🙂

What are your thoughts on the Firefox Voice Experiment?

  5. I used FF v28 for many years, because everything that came after v28 was dumbed down, uncomfortable etc… moved to quantum only recently, when FF v28 became completely broken and nothing would work anymore. Took me 8 months of working to make FF v67+ to work and behave to way I wanted. I’ve modded everything there was to mod, but since Mozilla decided to break about:config page and dumb it down even more, I’ve stopped updating again… I mean it’s funny from my point of view, as a software engineer with 30 years of experience, I totally get why updates are necessary and why from time to time the GUI must be changed completely… But as a user, I’m totally against it 😀

  6. Ugh, tutorial is *not* updated correctly. Address is not .xhtml (ibb.co/BcDX7xK), instead: chrome://global/content/config.xul

  7. Neither chrome://global/content/config.xul nor chrome://global/content/config.xhtml work anymore, I’m afraid.

  8. Someone ported the old about:config to modern Firefox. I gave it a shot and it works perfectly.

I’ll leave the link here in case anyone else is interested: github.com/earthlng/aboutconfig

There’s install instructions in its README and they’re quite easy to follow.

  9. I second Beliathal’s opinion. Firefox’s UI in recent years is progressively getting worse and worse. I only use ESR releases, and each major update degrades the previous experience. Old saying goes: “don’t fix what’s not broken”.

Speaking of FF 78: The new “megabar” (as I believe is called) in terms of usability is a regressive piece of garbage when compared to the older one. What was the reason to remove the perfectly functional dropdown? Why there are only 8 top sites? Why do I have to type space in the URL bar to get previous experience? Why do they break what was not broken?
