[Tip] How to Always Open Bookmarks in New Tabs in Mozilla Firefox

It was the most requested and much awaited feature which was missing in earlier versions of Mozilla Firefox web browser. If you click on a bookmark item present on the Bookmarks toolbar or from Bookmarks menu in Firefox, it always opens in the current tab. So opening a bookmark results in loosing the currently opened tab.

Many Firefox users were requesting Mozilla to implement an option in Firefox settings to enable opening bookmarks in new tabs so that users can keep continue working on the current tab.

Many Firefox users were taking help of 3rd party extensions to enable this functionality as there was no built-in method to force bookmarks to always open in new tabs.

Now the wait is over! Finally Mozilla has listened to all users requests and implemented a new preference in Firefox’s advanced configuration page “about:config” which can be used to enable/disable bookmarks opening in new tabs.

The new preference has been added to the newer versions of Firefox web browser such as 57.0 and later.

You can follow these simple steps to force Mozilla Firefox to always open bookmarks in new tabs:

1. Open Mozilla Firefox and type about:config in the addressbar and press Enter. It’ll show you a warning message, click on “I accept the risk!” button.

2. Now type bookmarksintabs in Search filter box and it’ll show result in the window.

3. Double-click on browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInTabs preference and it’ll change its value to true. Alternatively, you can right-click on the preference and select Toggle option.

That’s it. Now try to open a bookmark and it’ll load in new tab without touching your current tab.

  1. Just click with the mouse wheel to open the bookmark in a new window.
    Works on all links.

  2. That’s great for bookmarks. Pity there isn’t a similar option for an address typed into the address bar

  3. Thanks, VG!

Had been using an Add-on but it broke with v57. Tried others but they didn’t work reliably. I could use Ctrl-Lmouse click or middle click but it was easier to continue with simple clicking…

  4. PS : So config like that :

    browser.bookmarks.openInTabClosesMenu false

    browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground true
    browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInTabs false

And open a new bookmark with right click & open in a new tab.

    best regards

  5. Arfff my first comm didn’t sent.

So, If you open a new book mark like explained here, the book mark menu will close although you put browser.bookmarks.openInTabClosesMenu in false.

So the, see my post above.

    Sorry.

best regrads & sorry for my english, i’m french.

  6. This has suddenly stopped working in version 95.0.2

I’m so used to links and bookmarks automatically going to a new TAB that it is annoying!
