[Tip] Get Rid of “What’s New” Gift Icon from Mozilla Firefox Toolbar

In newer versions of Mozilla Firefox web browser, when you upgrade Firefox to a new version, the browser starts showing a Gift icon in its toolbar. This gift icon is called “What’s New” icon and is automatically shown after successful upgrading to latest Firefox version.

Following screenshot shows the “What’s New” gift icon displayed in Firefox toolbar:

When you click on the icon, it opens a fly-out panel describing new features added to Firefox new version.

As soon as you click on the gift icon, it automatically disappears from the toolbar. That’s a good thing. But the icon automatically appears in the toolbar again after next upgrade.

Many Firefox users may not like the addition of this “What’s New” gift icon to the toolbar. It might annoy them as they need to click on the icon every time to remove it from the toolbar.

In past, Firefox didn’t allow any UI option to disable or remove this feature and we had to take help of about:config tool to disable the gift icon. Following articles contain details about these methods:

New Working Method to Remove “What’s New” Gift Icon from Firefox Toolbar

Now here is a good news. Mozilla team has added a direct option to Firefox which can be used to permanently disable this “What’s New” toolbar icon and feature. You can modify this new option to completely remove “What’s New” functionality from Firefox. Once you deactivate this option, Firefox will no longer show “What’s New” gift icon in its toolbar and will stop notifying you about the new features.

Following steps will help you in disabling or removing “What’s New” gift icon automatically appearing in Firefox toolbar after installing new updates:

1. Open Firefox and click on the Hamburger (3-lines) icon present at the right-side end of the toolbar to open the main Firefox menu. Now click on What’s New menu to launch new features information panel.

2. You’ll see a checkbox at the bottom of the panel with the label “Notify about new features“. The option is enabled by default which means Firefox will keep showing “What’s New” gift icon in toolbar whenever you install a new version.

To disable the feature, uncheck or disable “Notify about new features” option.

That’s it. Now Firefox will never show “Whats’ New” gift icon in toolbar and will never notify you about new features present in newer versions.

PS: This “Notify about new features” checkbox modifies the same browser.messaging-system.whatsNewPanel.enabled preference/flag present in about:config page which we talked about in above mentioned tutorials. Mozilla has just added a UI for the flag.
