[Tip] Enable Support for JPEG XL Image Format in Google Chrome

This article will help you in enabling support for a new image format JPEG XL in newer versions of Google Chrome web browser (version 91 and later).

According to Wikipedia, JPEG XL is a new raster-graphics file format which has been developed to support both lossy and lossless compressions. This new image coding system comes with rich features and has been created specially to support responsive websites so that their content can render very well on multiple devices with different screen resolutions (more info).

JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, X determines the JPEG standard and L stands for Long-term.

JPEG XL format has been developed to replace the good ol’ legacy JPEG image format, so in future, you are going to see images in this new file format on several websites.

Modern web browsers have started including decoding support for this new image file format. Newer versions of Google Chrome web browser also come with built-in support for JPEG XL format.

By default, the support for JPEG XL format is disabled and interested users can activate it by modifying a hidden preference/flag.

If you also want to enable and test support for JPEG XL file format in Google Chrome 91 and later versions, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type jpeg in the “Search flags” box.

You’ll get following option:

Enable JXL image format
Adds image decoding support for the JPEG XL image format. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, Android
#enable-jxl

3. To activate and enable JPEG XL image format support in Chrome, select Enabled from the drop-down box.

4. Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. You have successfully activated and enabled support for JPEG XL file format in Chrome.

PS: In future, if you decide to disable the JPEG format support and restore default settings, select “Default” option from the drop-down box for above mentioned option and restart the browser.
