[Tip] Enable New Redesigned Address bar “Megabar” in Mozilla Firefox

The recently released version of Mozilla Firefox web browser comes with a redesigned address bar which has been labelled as “Megabar” by Mozilla team. Currently the new redesigned address bar is disabled by default and interested users need to manually activate and enable this hidden secret Megabar using a preference/flag.

Previously, Megabar was called “Quantumbar” but later Mozilla developer team renamed it to “Megabar”. We already told you about Megabar in our exclusive Firefox Nightly Updates topic. Check out UPDATE 137 in following article:

The new enhanced address bar i.e. Megabar shows address bar entries in a pop-up type UI as shown in following screenshot:

The new Megabar UI works in a fly-out which pop-ups as soon as the user starts typing in the address bar. It looks very similar to new Reborn 3 (R3) address bar recently introduced in Opera web browser.

If you like the new interface of Megabar and want to activate and enable it in Mozilla Firefox web browser, this tutorial will help you.

Check out following steps to manually enable new Megabar UI in Firefox web browser:

UPDATE: In newer versions of Mozilla Firefox, new Megabar is already activated and enabled by default. If you want to restore classic address bar, following article will help you:

1. Open Mozilla Firefox and type about:config in the addressbar and press Enter. It’ll show you a warning message, click on “I accept the risk!” button. It’ll open Firefox’s hidden secret advanced configuration page i.e. about:config page.

2. Now type megabar in Search filter box and look for following preference in the window:

browser.urlbar.megabar

The preference value is set to false by default, which means the new Megabar is disabled in Firefox.

3. To activate and enable new Megabar, double-click on browser.urlbar.megabar preference and set it to true. Alternatively, you can right-click on the preference and select Toggle option.

That’s it. Restart Firefox browser and enjoy new redesigned address bar.

PS: If you decide to restore previous classic address bar in future, set the value of above mentioned preference to false.

  1. I’ve installed Firefox 70.0 64-bit and made the change and restarted Firefox and I can’t find the new Megabar. What am I missing?

  2. No, that’s not the problem. I’ve turned off the URL Drop Down Suggetions in my Firefox which has probably caused the problem. I do get a larger address bar but nothing fancy in it. I won’t be using the megabar modification. Very sorry to have bothered you. Keep up the great work. Wally

  3. Thanks so much for figuring this out and sharing it. Not only did it work flawlessly, but your tutorial was comprehensive and easy to follow.

    Thanks again.

  4. I tried your suggestion to disable megabar, but do not have the True & False options you describe.
I have only ” Boolean, Number, string”. Why?
