[Tip] Enable Hidden Secret “Performance Mode” in Microsoft Edge

Newer versions of Microsoft Edge web browser (version 91 and later) come with a hidden secret feature called “Performance Mode“. This new feature is disabled by default and interested users will need to manually activate and enable it by using a secret command-line parameter which we are going to share in this article.

In this tutorial, we are going to tell you what is this new Performance Mode and how to enable and use it in Microsoft Edge web browser.

Performance Mode has been developed and implemented in Microsoft Edge to optimize and improve the overall performance of the web browser. It’ll help the browser to save device battery and minimize system resources usage (CPU, RAM). Once Performance Mode is turned on, the browser will consume less CPU resources and RAM and will put unused tabs to sleep. You can also expect faster loading time when you launch Microsoft Edge browser.

Here is the official description of Performance Mode given in the browser settings page:

This mode helps optimize your browser’s performance by saving battery and minimizing resource usage (memory, CPU). Performance improvements might vary depending on your device specifications and individual browser habits.

It puts background tabs to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity (if sleeping tabs is on). Timer will go back to its previous selection when you’re not in performance mode.

While we do our best to minimize impact to your experience, performance mode may cause videos to be less smooth and animations to slow down when you’re not interacting with the browser.

Performance Mode is a hidden secret feature at the moment and will come enabled in future versions of Microsoft Edge web browser.

UPDATE: Performance mode has been renamed to Efficiency mode as described in following article:

Microsoft Edge 91 and later versions users can enable and use it right now with the help of following steps:

1. Right-click on Microsoft Edge shortcut on Desktop and select Properties option. If Microsoft Edge shortcut is pinned to Taskbar, right-click on it and again right-click on Microsoft Edge option present on the jumplist and select Properties option.

If you launch Microsoft Edge from Start Menu, copy and paste following string in RUN dialog box and press Enter key:

%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

It’ll open Programs folder in File Explorer which contains Microsoft Edge shortcut. Right-click on it and select Properties option.

2. Once you open Microsoft Edge properties box, append following string at the end of the text string present in Target field:

--enable-features=msPerformanceModeToggle

Remember there must be a blank space between existing text string and the appended string.

3. Apply the changes and launch Microsoft Edge using the shortcut.

That’s it. You have successfully activated and added Performance Mode feature in Microsoft Edge. But you’ll need to enable the feature using Settings page.

4. Click on the 3-dots menu button present at the right-side of the toolbar and select Settings option from the main menu. Alternatively, you can press ALT+F keys together to show Edge Menu and then press S key to open Settings page. You can also directly open Edge Settings page using edge://settings/ URL in address bar.

5. Now go to System tab and in right-side pane, you’ll see a new option “Performance Mode” added to Optimize Performance section.

Select “Always On” option from the drop-down box given next to the option.

Now you have successfully enabled Performance Mode in Microsoft Edge web browser and you should notice performance improvements while using the browser.

PS: In future, if you decide to disable Performance Mode feature, either set “Performance Mode” option to Always Off in Microsoft Edge Settings page or remove the command-line parameter from Target field in Microsoft Edge shortcut’s properties and save the changes.

NOTE: If you are already using another “–disable-features” or “–enable-features” parameter in Microsoft Edge shortcut, following article will help you in using more than one “–disable-features” or “–enable-features” parameter in Edge’s properties:
