[Tip] Enable Hidden Secret Experiments Page in Mozilla Firefox

This tutorial will help you in activating and enabling a hidden secret “Firefox Experiments” (also referred as Feature Gates) page in Mozilla Firefox web browser (version 79.0 and later).

The recently released 79.0 version and later versions of Mozilla Firefox web browser come with a secret extra page called “Firefox Experiments” which is disabled and hidden by default. Interested users need to manually activate and add the secret page by following a few steps given in this tutorial.

Once enabled, the Experiments page can be accessed using Firefox Options (about:preferences) page.

Currently this new Experiments page is under development and testing and only one option is available to enable/disable on this page. More options and functionality will be added in future versions of Firefox browser.

Following screenshot shows the new Experiments page live in action in Firefox web browser:

As you can see only a single option “CSS Masonry Layout” is available on Firefox Experiments page to turn on or off. This option can be enabled to add support for the experimental CSS Masonry Layout feature (a web design pattern).

If you remember, this new Experiments page was recently added to Nightly (testing) builds of Firefox web browser. We told you about the page in UPDATE 142 in our exclusive Firefox Nightly Updates topic. In Firefox Nightly builds more options such as AVIF, WebGPU are available to customize and change on Experiments page.

If you also want to reveal and add the secret Firefox Experiments page in Mozilla Firefox web browser, following steps will help you:

1. Open Mozilla Firefox and type about:config in the addressbar and press Enter. It’ll show you a warning message, click on “Accept the Risk and Continue” button. It’ll open Firefox’s hidden secret advanced configuration page i.e. about:config page.

2. Now type experimental in Search filter box and look for following preference in the window:

browser.preferences.experimental

The preference value is set to false by default, which means the secret Experiments page is deactivated and disabled in Firefox.

3. To manually activate and enable the Experiments page, double-click on browser.preferences.experimental preference and set it to true. Alternatively, you can click on the Toggle icon given next to the preference name.

4. Now click on the Hamburger (3-lines) icon present at the right-side end of the toolbar to open the main Firefox menu. Now click on Options menu to open Firefox settings page.

You can also direct option this page using about:preferences command in address bar.

That’s it. You’ll notice the newly added “Firefox Experiments” tab or section present in left-side pane.

PS: To remove the Experiments page, open about:config page again and set the browser.preferences.experimental preference/flag to False.
