[Tip] Enable Hidden Secret “Commander” Feature in Google Chrome

In this article, we’ll tell you how to activate and enable a new hidden secret “Commander” feature in Google Chrome 91 and later versions.

By default, the new Commander feature is disabled and interested users need to manually activate and enable it by modifying a secret preference/flag.

The new Commander feature displays a Search box at the top of Chrome browser and allows users to access built-in browser features or commands quickly and easily.

Once activated, you can launch Commander tool by pressing Ctrl+Spacebar keys together. The Commander search box always stays on top. Now you can type any character or text string and Chrome will display related commands in the result drop-down list.

Following screenshot shows new Commander feature live in action in Google Chrome web browser:

It also displays associated keyboard shortcut/hotkey next to the command in result set.

You can dismiss Commander box by pressing Ctrl+Spacebar keys again or by pressing Esc key.

If you want to enable and test Commander tool in Google Chrome web browser, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in address bar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type commander in the “Search flags” box.

You’ll get following option:

Enable a text interface to browser features. Invoke with Ctrl-Space. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS

3. To activate and enable Commander feature in Chrome, select Enabled from the drop-down box.

4. Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. You have successfully activated and enabled Commander tool in Chrome.

Now try to press Ctrl+Space bar keys together and Chrome will show new Commander search box at the top.

PS: In future, if you decide to disable or remove Commander feature, select “Default” option from the drop-down box for above mentioned option and restart the browser.
