[Tip] Enable “Extensions” Menu Button in Firefox Toolbar Similar to Chrome and Edge

The latest version of Mozilla Firefox web browser (104 and later) come with a hidden secret feature which can be enabled to add a dedicated “Extensions” menu button to Firefox toolbar similar to Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers. By default, this new feature is disabled for public but this article will help you in manually enabling this secret feature right now in Firefox stable version.

Mozilla Testing Dedicated Extensions Menu Button in Firefox Toolbar

Mozilla team is working on a unified or dedicated Extensions menu in Firefox which will display a Jigsaw Puzzle piece icon in toolbar to help users in accessing and managing all installed extensions quickly and easily using a single button.

The puzzle piece icon will show a drop-down list of all installed extensions or add-ons in Firefox so that the user can easily use an extension or manage installed extensions. Users will be able to uninstall or remove any extension directly using this new Extensions menu button present in the toolbar.

This Extensions menu feature is already available in Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome and Edge and now Mozilla team is also going to implement it in Firefox.

At the moment, Extensions menu is a work in progress i.e. under development and testing phase and will take some time in becoming officially available in Firefox but Mozilla team has provided a secret preference/flag to manually activate and enable it for interested users.

By modifying a flag, you can enable this upcoming Extensions menu button feature right now in Firefox 104 or later versions and can start testing it.

How to Enable Extensions Menu Button in Firefox Toolbar Right Now

Following steps will help you in enabling the dedicated Extensions menu button in Firefox toolbar:

1. Open Firefox and type about:config in the addressbar and press Enter. It’ll show you a warning message, click on “Accept the Risk and Continue” button. It’ll open Firefox’s hidden secret advanced configuration page i.e. about:config page.

3. This preference is set to false by default which means the secret Extensions menu button is disabled.

To enable the new Extensions menu button in Firefox toolbar, double-click on the preference extensions.unifiedExtensions.enabled and set its value to true. Alternatively, you can click on the Toggle icon given next to the preference name.

4. You’ll need to restart Firefox to take effects. If you have opened multiple tabs and you don’t want to lose them, you can restart Firefox without losing tabs using methods given in following tutorial:

That’s it. Restart Firefox browser and now you’ll see a new Puzzle piece icon added to the toolbar.

PS: As eariler said, the Extensions menu feature is under development so you might face a few bugs while using it such as the cog wheel icon to customize extension is not working at the moment. Full functionality will be added in upcoming versions of Firefox.

How to Disable or Remove Extensions Menu Button from Firefox Toolbar

If you want to disable or remove the new Extensions menu button from Firefox toolbar, set the above mentioned preference/flag extensions.unifiedExtensions.enabled to false again using about:config page. Restart Firefox and it’ll turn off the new Extensions menu button feature.

  1. There has always (well, a long time anyway) been a way of adding the extensions icon to the toolbar, via the Customize Toolbar option without having to change any Firefox preferences!
