[Tip] Enable Dark Theme Mode on All Websites in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge

UPDATE: This tutorial to enable Dark Mode on all websites and pages works in both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge web browsers.

Dark Mode or Night Mode are very popular now-a-days. All popular software (including Windows 10 operating system) are implementing built-in dark theme or dark mode feature to please black or dark UI lovers.

Dark mode are very helpful specially if you are using the software at night time. It reduces eye strain and helps in working for long time on computers, mobile phones without causing pains in eyes.

Recently Google Chrome browser implemented Dark theme mode support to its Desktop as well as mobile phone versions. You can read more about how to enable dark theme mode in Google Chrome in following tutorials:

Chrome team also implemented a cool feature in mobile version of Chrome which allowed users to visit every website in dark mode or dark theme even if the website doesn’t provide any native dark theme. The option was not enabled by default but interested users needed to turn on a hidden preference/flag to activate this feature. You can read more about it in following tutorial:

Now here is a good news for Google Chrome users who use the popular Chrome browser in their computers. The latest version of Google Chrome comes with this feature built-in for PC. Now you can enable dark theme mode for all websites and can browse them in dark mode in Chrome on your Desktop PC or laptops.

If you also want to browse all websites in dark theme mode using Google Chrome browser in your PC or laptop, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in addressbar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type dark in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

Force Dark Mode for Web Contents
Automatically render all web contents using a dark theme. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, Android
#enable-force-dark

By default the option is disabled for all users.

3. Select Enabled from the drop-down box.

4. Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. Now try to open any website in Chrome and enjoy the new dark mode look of the website.

PS: There are many other variations of dark theme mode for websites available in drop-down box such as:

  • Enabled with simple HSL-based inversion
  • Enabled with simple CIELAB-based inversion
  • Enabled with simple RGB-based inversion
  • Enabled with selective image inversion
  • Enabled with selective inversion of non-image elements
  • Enabled with selective inversion of everything

All options apply different dark theme mode on websites. You can try to apply them one by one and test the result. Keep the one which suits better for you.

NOTE: If you want to disable dark theme mode on websites in future, select “Default” option from the drop-down box and restart the browser.
