[Tip] Disable Typing Suggestions from Favorites and History in Microsoft Edge Address bar

When you start typing in Microsoft Edge address bar (or Omnibox), the browser starts showing typing suggestions (in a drop-down list) about related searches and websites by sending your typed characters to search engine used by the address bar.

The browser also shows suggestions taken from your favorites websites and browsing history in the address bar as shown in following screenshot:

Interested users can disable the search and site suggestions based on typed characters using Microsoft Edge Settings. But even if you disable the feature, Microsoft Edge still shows suggestions from your favorites (bookmarks) and browsing history. It just stops sending typed data to search engine. But suggestions are still shown in the address bar taken from your favorites and history.

If you are concerned about your privacy and want to disable suggestions taken from your favorites and history as well, here is a good news for you.

Newer versions of Microsoft Edge come with a hidden preference/flag which can be enabled to add a new option in Microsoft Edge Settings page which can be turned off to completely disable suggestions in the address bar.

We told you about this trick in UPDATE 16 in our exclusive Microsoft Edge Canary Updates topic when Microsoft Edge 83.0 was under development and testing phase.

Once you disable the new option in Settings, Microsoft Edge will stop displaying suggestions from your favorites and history in the address bar.

Following steps will help you in turning off typing suggestions from favorites and history in Microsoft Edge address bar:

1. Open Microsoft Edge web browser and type edge://flags/ in addressbar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration or experiments page.

2. Now type toggle in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

Enable local providers toggle
Enables toggle to control whether history and favorites suggestions are shown in the omnibox – Mac, Windows

3. Select Enabled for Enable local providers toggle option from the drop-down box.

4. Microsoft Edge will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Restart” button to restart Microsoft Edge.

You have successfully enabled a new secret option in Microsoft Edge Settings.

5. Now click on Main Menu (3-dots menu) button present at the right-side of the toolbar and select Settings option. Alternatively, you can press ALT+F keys together to show Edge Menu and then press S key to open Settings page. You can also directly open Edge Settings page using edge://settings/ URL in address bar.

Now go to Privacy and services tab and in right-side pane, scroll down to bottom.

Click on Address bar option.

Now you’ll see a new option “Show me suggestions from history, favorites and other data on this device using my typed characters” which is turned ON by default.

Set both toggle options “Show me search and site suggestions using my typed characters” and “Show me suggestions from history, favorites and other data on this device using my typed characters” to OFF.

That’s it. Now Microsoft Edge will no longer show suggestions from search, websites, favorites and your browsing history in address bar.

  1. Coming from Firefox where the option has been available for years, this is a great solution. This was one of the last things stopping me moving to Edge/Chromium.

    Thank you.
