[Tip] Disable Sponsored Ads in Opera on Mobile Phones and Tablets

If you use Opera Mini or Opera browser (with free VPN) in your mobile phone or tablet, you must follow the steps given in this tutorial to improve your privacy and disable unwanted and irritating sponsored content, advertisements, 3rd party app promotions and news articles displaying in Opera web browser’s start page.

If you use Opera or Opera Mini browser in your mobile phone or tablet, you might have noticed sponsored ads and app promotions displaying on homepage (or speed dial page, new tab page, start page). These advertisements are shown inside the news feed which shows latest articles from random websites.

Following screenshot shows sponsored content and app advertisements inside news feed in Opera web browser in one of my Android smartphones:

Many readers have asked me how to disable or remove these sponsored ads from Opera browser on their mobile phones and tablets.

If you also want to get rid of these annoying and irritating 3rd party app promotions and unwanted advertisements from Opera browser in your mobile phone or tablet, this tutorial will help you.

This tutorial will assist you in:

  • Disabling sponsored ads and app promotions in Opera on mobile phones and tablets
  • Disabling unwanted news feed on start page, homepage, speed dial page or new tab page
  • Disabling unwanted notifications from Opera about product and services news
  • Disabling personalized ads in Opera based on your browsing activities
  • Turning off usage statistics and data collection in Opera to improve privacy
  • Setting an absolute blank/empty page without any clutter as start page in Opera

Remove Sponsored Ads from Opera Mini Browser in Mobile Phones

1. Open Opera Mini browser and tap on Opera Main Menu icon shown at the bottom-right corner in Opera toolbar.

2. Now tap on Settings (cog-wheel) icon shown in the top toolbar in the menubar.

3. It’ll open Opera Settings page. Tap on Start page content option.

4. Set the toggle button given next to News to OFF. In other words, disable News option.

5. Now go back to Settings page, scroll down and tap on Notifications option.

6. Set the toggle button given next to Opera notifications to OFF. In other words, disable Opera notifications option.

7. Now go back to Settings page, scroll down and tap on Advanced option.

8. Now set Usage statistics and Personalised ads options to Disabled.

Now check Opera Mini homepage or speed dial page and you’ll get a clutter-free page without unwanted news, sponsored ads, promotions, etc.

If you want, you can delete existing speed dial shortcuts as well. Tap and hold on a shortcut and drag the shortcut over Remove option given at the top. Repeat same process for all existing speed dial shortcuts and you’ll get a blank empty page as your homepage in Opera Mini browser.

Remove Sponsored Ads from Opera Browser with VPN in Mobile Phones

1. Open Opera browser and tap on Opera Main Menu icon shown at the bottom-right corner in Opera toolbar.

2. Now tap on Settings (cog-wheel) icon shown in the bottom toolbar in the menubar.

3. It’ll open Opera Settings page. Scroll down and look for Home page section.

4. Set the toggle button given next to News to OFF. In other words, disable News option.

5. Now set the toggle button given next to Opera notifications to OFF. In other words, disable Opera notifications option.

6. Now set the toggle button given next to Suggested sites and Trending searches options under Search section to OFF.

7. Scroll down to bottom and set toggle button given next to Send usage reports to OFF.

Now check Opera homepage or speed dial page and you’ll get a clutter-free page without unwanted news, sponsored ads, promotions, etc.

  1. Thanks VG. Much needed. One problem though. Tap and Hold on a shortcut does not work. Nothing happens. They are sticky.

  2. I’d successfully customized the home page and stopped/removed all the annoying suggested content. (I’d switched to Opera on my Android phone as Chrome is terrible for this and since about release 80 they’d removed the flag setting that prevents it).

    However I keep getting icons appearing for suggested sites. These aren’t based on my browsing preferences or search history (I’ve just had one added for a betting company and I don’t gamble), so I’m guessing it’s a security flaw. Consequently I’ve reported it as a bug as obviously something is overriding the settings. Yeah, sure I can delete them, but it REALLY irritates me. Not sure you guys can do anything about it, but I just wanted to let off steam.
