[Tip] Disable Recommended Extensions Suggestions in Mozilla Firefox

Newer versions of Mozilla Firefox web browser show extensions recommendations and suggestions in address bar. Users may see a new “Recommendation” label with a puzzle icon in the address bar when they visit a website. When they click on the “Recommendation” label, a new “Recommended Extension” pop-up is displayed in address bar which shows an extension suggestion. Users can click on the “Add Now” button to install the extension in their web browser or click on “Not Now” button or “Don’t Show Me This Recommendation” option to dismiss the extension suggestion.

If you also find these recommendations/suggestions/tips annoying and want to disable them, this tutorial will help you.

Today in this tutorial, we’ll tell you how to turn off these extensions recommendations and suggestions and how to get rid of them permanently in Firefox web browser.

This new extensions recommendation feature is called Contextual Feature Recommender (CFR) which allows Mozilla to occasionally show personalized extensions recommendations to users based on their visited websites or ways they engage with the browser. According to Mozilla, they do not collect or store users browsing history to make those recommendations. All recommended extensions are manually selected by Mozilla team and meet Mozilla’s highest standards for functionality, user experience and security.

Firefox may show recommended extension suggestions on many popular websites such as Facebook, YouTube, Gmail, Amazon, Reddit, etc. The suggested extensions include Facebook Container, YouTube, Google Translate, Amazon Assistant, etc.

If you want to opt out of these extensions recommendations and suggestions, you can completely block the Contextual Feature Recommender (CFR) feature using following methods:

METHOD 1: Using Firefox Options (About:Preferences) Page

1. Open Firefox and click on the Hamburger icon present at the right-side end of the toolbar to open the main menu. Now click on Options menu to open Firefox settings page.

Alternatively, you can direct option this page using about:preferences command in address bar.

It’s enabled by default i.e. extensions recommendations are shown.

Uncheck the option to disable extensions recommendations and suggestions.

Now you’ll no longer receive recommended extensions suggestions in Firefox.

PS: When an extension recommendation is shown in Firefox address bar, you can click on the down arrow given at the bottom-right corner of the pop-up and select “Manage Recommendation Settings” option. It’ll directly let you go to “Browsing” section in Firefox Options page.

METHOD 2: Using About:Config Page

1. Open Mozilla Firefox and type about:config in the addressbar and press Enter. It’ll show you a warning message, click on “I accept the risk!” button. It’ll open Firefox’s hidden secret advanced configuration page i.e. about:config page.

2. Now type cfr in Search filter box and it’ll show following preference in the window:

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.asrouter.userprefs.cfr.addons

3. The preference value is set to true, it means the extensions recommendations are enabled.
