[Tip] Disable Post-Upgrade Setup Wizard Screen in Windows 10

We know that Microsoft regularly releases new feature updates or versions of Windows 10 operating system. The company releases 2 feature updates for Windows 10 every year and these feature updates are automatically downloaded and installed via Windows Updates program. (Related)

These new feature updates bring new features, changes and improvements to Windows 10 and that’s why when you upgrade to a new feature update, Windows 10 automatically shows a post-upgrade setup wizard highlighting various Microsoft services such as Windows Hello, Your Phone, Office 365, OneDrive, etc.

Following screenshot shows the post-upgrade screen (or welcome experience) live in action:

The setup screen displays in full screen and you get 2 buttons to select: Skip for now and Let’s go. If you don’t want to go through the setup wizard and want to go straight to the desktop, you can click on “Skip for now” option and it’ll skip the setup wizard. If you click on “Let’s go” button, Windows 10 will guide you through various questions to turn on/off those features and services.

According to Microsoft, the options available on post-upgrade setup screen are cloud programmable and may change over time to promote new features and services.

Windows 10 shows this post-upgrade setup screen so that users who purchased their Windows 10 device long time back, can activate and enable new features and services if they missed them in past.

If you don’t want to get this post-upgrade setup screen every time you upgrade to a new feature update or version of Windows 10, you can permanently disable and remove it.

Microsoft provides a built-in option to completely turn off post-upgrade setup screen feature in Windows 10.

Following steps will help you in disabling post-upgrade setup screen in Windows 10 devices:

2. Now click on “System” item present in Settings app.

3. Now click on Notifications & Actions section present in left-side pane.

PS: Alternatively, You can also directly launch the Notifications & actions page using “ms-settings:notifications” command in RUN dialog box as mentioned here.

4. In right-side pane, uncheck or disable following options:

  • Show me the Windows welcome experience after updates and occasionally when I sign in to highlight what’s new and suggested
  • Suggest ways I can finish setting up my device to get the most out of Windows

PS: The second option “Suggest ways I can finish setting up my device to get the most out of Windows” will only be available on eligible devices which were upgraded from an older version of Windows 10. If you perform a clean or fresh installation of Windows 10, you might not see this option in Settings.

That’s it. You have successfully deactivated post-upgrade setup screen feature and now Windows 10 will no longer show the setup wizard after upgrading to newer versions or feature updates.

  1. Sadly this does not work. I’ve had all the notification boxes unchecked for a long time, but I still get the ^%$# blue screen nagging me to sign up for all the wonderful Microsoft services they want to sell. I mean, really? If I wanted them I’d have signed up years ago. Yet I get repeated nags. I’ve tried registry hacks, but the specified keys have been removed by Microsoft.

I find this so frustrating that I’ve spent many hours trying to find a way to covert to Linux, but there are a few applications important to me that just will not work without Win10.
