[Tip] Disable or Remove Promos Displaying on New Tab Page in Google Chrome

Sometimes Google Chrome shows promotions and product advertisements on New Tab Page (NTP). When you open a new tab or launch Google Chrome web browser, it shows those sponsored ads and promotions at the bottom middle area on New Tab page.

Now-a-days Google Chrome is showing a text link “Coronavirus information and resources (CONID-19)” on the bottom middle area of New Tab page as shown in following screenshot:

There is no option provided to delete or remove these messages and users are unable to disable these promotional messages.

Fortunately, Google Chrome newer versions come with a hidden preference/flag which can be enabled to add a “Dismiss” (X) button next to these promotional messages and users can click on the Dismiss button to permanently get rid of these messages.

Following screenshot shows “Dismiss” or “Close” button activated for these ads and promotional messages on New Tab page in Google Chrome:

If you also want to disable or remove these ads and promotions on New Tab page in Google Chrome web browser, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in addressbar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type promos in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

Dismiss promos on the New Tab Page

3. To enable the ability to dismiss these promotional messages, select Enabled for Dismiss promos on the New Tab Page option from the drop-down box.

4. Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. Now open New Tab page in Google Chrome and you’ll see a Close (X) button given next to the promotional message. Click on the Close button and the ad or promotional message will no longer display on New Tab page.

PS: If you decide to disable the feature and re-enable promotional messages on New Tab page, select “Default” option from the drop-down box and restart the browser.

  1. Thanks for this. It was hard to find the solution by searching.

It’s a symptom of the age. It’s so tempting for internet companies to spoil their hard-earned good faith. Seems there’s still a way out with Chrome although the window does seem to be closing. Heck, I remember a time when Google swore they’d never put ads in search results…

  2. I don’t have this option in the flags list in Chrome browser on brand new Surface Book, running Windows 10. I searched for Promos and for Dismiss and New Tab Page. There are no available updates to Chrome. Is there another way to get rid of this annoyance?
