[Tip] Disable or Hide “Reveal Password” Button in Microsoft Edge Web Browser

When you open a website which requires login to user account such as email websites (GMail, Outlook, etc), bank websites, organization websites, etc, you might have noticed that the password field sometimes shows a small “Eye” icon or button in Enter Password field. As soon as you start typing your password in password box, the web browser displays the Eye icon. This eye icon can be clicked to show or reveal the password. So you can click on the eye icon and your password will be displayed on screen just like a normal text.

By default the password field shows asterisks (*) for all characters typed in the box to improve user’s privacy and security. The “Reveal Password” icon is shown by the browser so that you can check the password for any typing mistake.

It might be a security risk and you may want to disable this feature.

Microsoft Edge web browser also shows the eye icon i.e. Reveal Password icon in password fields. If you are using Microsoft Edge web browser and want to disable or remove the Reveal Password (Eye) icon from password field, this tutorial will help you.

Fortunately, Microsoft has added a new option to Microsoft Edge Settings page (version 87 and later) which can be used to show/hide “Reveal Password” icon in password fields on websites.

Remember some websites are programmed to always show “Reveal Password” icon in their forms, this trick will not work for those websites. Some websites provide a checkbox to “Show Password”, this method will not disable that functionality.

The option present in Microsoft Edge Settings will disable or remove the “Reveal Password” (Eye) icon which is shown by the browser in all password fields. So the trick will work on some websites only.

If you also want to get rid of “Reveal Password” icon present in password field in Microsoft Edge web browser, following steps will help you:

1. Open Microsoft Edge browser and click on the 3-dots menu button present at the right-side of the toolbar. Now select Settings option from the main menu.

You can also directly open Edge Settings page using edge://settings/ URL in address bar.

2. Now keep Profiles tab active and in right-side pane, click on Passwords option.

It’ll open new page to modify passwords related settings.

Now look for following option:

Show the “Reveal password” button in password fields
Selecting this button shows what you’ve typed. Some sites may override this setting

As its description mentions, it shows “Eye” icon to reveal the typed password in password box on websites and some sites may override this setting. It’s enabled by default.
