[Tip] Disable Annoying Startup Notification Sound When You Restart Your Mobile Phone

This article contains solution to fix annoying startup notification sound issue which occurs when you restart your Samsung smartphone. I have faced this issue in Samsung Galaxy S9, S10, S20, Note 10 and other A Series and M Series mobile phones. Although I noticed this problem in Samsung smartphones but I’m sure other Google Android phones may also have this issue and the solution given in this article should also work in all Android smartphones.

Today in this article, I’m going to address a very annoying and irritating issue present in my Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

Since a few months, I noticed that whenever I restart my mobile phone, the default notification sound is automatically played at startup. No, I’m not talking about the boot or splash screen where Samsung or mobile carrier logo is shown along with music clip. I’m talking abut the notification sound which is played when the mobile phone has started completely and the home screen has loaded on screen.

As soon as the mobile phone starts and displays the home screen, the default notification sound plays automatically. You can consider this notification sound as startup sound. Whenever I restarted the mobile phone, it played the notification sound at startup.

In beginning, I thought that there might be some app notifications, that’s why the mobile phone played notification sound. Surprisingly when the notification sound was played, no notification was shown in notification bar or status bar. When this issue started occurring every time I rebooted my mobile phone, it became very irritating. I just wanted to stop and block the annoying notification sound at startup.

I checked sound settings but I was unable to find any option to get rid of the startup notification sound.

Finally I decided to investigating the issue. I cleared recent apps history and then restarted my mobile phone. The mobile phone again played the notification sound at startup. I immediately checked the recent apps history. Unfortunately no app was listed there. I did this so that I can check which app is starting automatically at startup and causing this notification sound issue. But it didn’t work.

I also checked notifications history page in Settings -> Notifications page but it also didn’t show any recent notification.

The most irritating and surprising part was that the notification sound was playing even if DND (Do Not Disturb) mode was activated and enabled in mobile phone. Generally apps notifications are automatically muted in DND mode. So I was surprised why the mobile phone is playing notification sound at every startup?

I tried other tricks such as turning off system sound, notification sound, applying silent mode, etc, but the default notification sound still played at startup.

It was also surprising to see that the notification sound was playing in full volume level at startup even if I set the volume level to lowest limit possible.

It was a very annoying and shocking issue and after some troubleshooting, finally I was able to find out the culprit behind the problem and fix the issue.

I think new Samsung mobile phones come with this startup notification sound feature. They play the default notification sound at each startup whenever the user restarts the mobile phone.

I was able to disable or remove this annoying startup notification sound in my mobile phone using following steps:

1. Open All Apps screen or open Settings page.

2. Now tap inside the Search box and type System UI and tap on search button to search for the term.

3. You’ll see one or two instances of System UI listed under App Info section in search result.

4. Tap on both System UI entries one by one and do as following:

  • When you’ll tap on System UI option, it’ll open System UI app info page.
  • Tap on Notifications option.
  • Now look for fbe_channel_name or Phone restarted option listed on the page. The option should be present at the bottom of the list.
  • All notifications toggle buttons look grayed out i.e. disabled but they all are enabled and can be turned off by tapping on the notification name.
  • Now tap on fbe_channel_name or Phone restarted option and set it to Silent and Minimized.

That’s it. Now try to restart your mobile phone and it’ll no longer play the irritating notification sound at startup.

NOTE: If you can’t find fbe_channel_name or Phone restarted options listed under Notifications page, check whether the page shows 4 categories deleted or similar message at bottom. If you see the message, it means Samsung removed the option to customize startup notification sound form your mobile phone firmware.

PS: You can try to set other available options such as Alerts, General Messages, Hints, etc to Silent to disable startup notification sound.

  1. What startup sound? I have a recent model Samsung phone, and it has no sound when starting. Bien etrange.

  2. ^^ When the mobile phone is restarted and reaches to Home Screen. The default notification sound plays but there are no app notifications displayed. Its a new feature which plays startup sound when mobile phone restarts.

  3. My S9 is less than a year old and I am unable to find references to fbe_channel name etc. as I try to shut off the stupid startup notification sound!

  4. Thank you so much! Not only was this annoying but potentially dangerous to anyone who would need to turn on a phone silently.

  5. Hi VG, thanks for your article, we need people like you!! System UI in my Android S21 doesn’t pop up in the search or All Apps. I can only find it in ‘change system settings’ but it then doesn’t give the options you listed. Would you have further tips please? The start-up noise is really annoying…! Thanks so much.

  6. Your write up is the best I have seen in explaining that in System UI, even though the on-off toggles appear to be grey, you can still tap (for example) “Phone Restarted” and change the setting to silent. HOWEVER, this does NOT stop the annoying ding-a-ling-a-ling “tune” from ringing full volume when the T-Mobile splash screen comes up on start up or reboot (after the Samsung splash screen). I called Samsung technical support, and was even transferred to the expert “Media Solutions” department, and was ultimately told that THIS CANNOT BE PERMANENTLY TURNED OFF. The only workaround I found (on my own) was before turning off my phone to turn on “Do Not Disturb” (one of the drop down options you drag from the top of the phone, on the second “page” of those options). This temporarily stops the annoying sound on startup or reboot. The problem is that you need to remember to do this whenever you turn off the phone and then remember to turn off “Do Not Disturb” when you restart your phone. Bottom line is that this is a temporary work-around. That the T-Mobile splash screen (and I assume other carriers’ splash screens) ding-a-ling-a-ling cannot be permanently turned off appears to be a design flaw with this phone.

  7. ^^ That splash screen is being shown by the network provider, that’s why the option is not working for it. DND is the best workaround.

  8. thank you so much! This has been a major irritation as I like to check my phone if I cant sleep, and the particular sound (popcorn) is at a frequency that wakes my dog – who then must be taken out within 15 minutes or so or she may have an accident.

  9. I’m using techno Pop 6. 1 have tried all possible ways to mute start up sound but to no avail. Please help.

  10. I figured out another way to turn off the startup sound, on my S9+ at least.

Used the Google Files app to look for all audio files. I deleted the one called “Fanfare.”

Was a little worried that it was going to throw an exception when I restarted my phone, but it seems to have worked and now it turns on silently 😀
