[Tip] Customize Microsoft Edge UI and Theme Using New Accent Color Feature

If you are a theme and customization lover and always like to change theme and UI of software programs, here is a good news for you.

Newer versions of Microsoft Edge web browser come with a hidden secret feature called “Accent Color” which allows users to customize the browser look and feel. You can change Microsoft Edge theme color by selecting any desired theme from given set.

You can customize the color of browser toolbar, tab bar, titlebar and New Tab page background. You can set the color to Gray, Blue, Pink, Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, etc according to your requirements.

Following screenshot shows Microsoft Edge browser in customized theme and UI color:

By default, the new Accent color feature is disabled and not available to users but interested users can manually activate and enable it by modifying a hidden secret preference/flag which we are going to share in this tutorial.

UPDATE: Microsoft Edge 91 and later come with new Accent feature enabled by default. So you no longer need to activate the feature using hidden preference/flag. Jump to Step 5 to learn how to use the new feature.

If you also want to customize Microsoft Edge theme and UI color using this new feature, following steps will help you:

1. Open Microsoft Edge web browser and type edge://flags/ in addressbar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration or experiments page.

2. Now type theme in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

Enable picker for color based themes
When enabled, gives a set of options for autogenerated themes based on a base color – Mac, Windows, Linux

3. To activate and enable the new Accent Color feature, set the above mentioned option to Enabled using the drop-down box.

4. Microsoft Edge will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Restart” button to restart Microsoft Edge.

Congratulations. You have successfully activated Accent Color feature in Microsoft Edge browser.

5. Now click on the 3-dots menu button present at the right-side of the toolbar and select Settings option from the main menu.

Alternatively, you can press ALT+F keys together to show Edge Menu and then press S key to open Settings page. You can also directly open Edge Settings page using edge://settings/ URL in address bar.

6. Now click on Appearance tab in left sidebar and in right-side pane, you’ll see new Accent Color section.

This is the new secret section which was not present by default in Microsoft Edge.

7. Now select any desired accent color and it’ll immediately change Microsoft Edge toolbar and New Tab page color.

Currently only following Accent colors are available to choose:

  • Light gray
  • Dark gray
  • Dark blue
  • Medium blue
  • Light pink
  • Pink
  • Mint
  • Teal
  • Grey blue
  • Purple
  • Red
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Green

8. To restore default theme and color, click on “Default” accent color thumbnail or click on “Remove” button given next to “Custom Theme” option. It’ll immediately apply default theme and UI color in Microsoft Edge.
