[Problem] Windows 10 Hangs (Not Responding) For Few Minutes After Restart

I’m using Windows 10 operating system in several computers including Desktop PCs, laptops and tablets. A few machines are also using the testing Insider Preview builds of Windows 10 and I never faced a single problem or issue in any of my machines. All machines were working absolutely fine.

Suddenly one machine started having a very strange and irritating issue. The problem started after installing a cumulative update released for Windows 10. This particular Windows 10 machine is up-to-date and contains all released updates.

The particular Windows 10 machine works fine and doesn’t throw any error message but the problem starts after rebooting the machine.

As soon as I restart the device, everything loads fine and suddenly after a few minutes (hardly 4-5 minutes), the computer hangs and Windows 10 enters into the infamous Not Responding state.

Nothing works and nothing opens. I can’t click on any icon, Taskbar or Desktop. Only the mouse cursor works and moves here and there, nothing else.

After 1-2 minutes, Windows shows the classic not responding dialog box as shown in following image:

The application is not responding. The program may respond again if you wait.

Do you want to end this process?

[End Process] [Cancel]

Sometimes I’m able to click on the buttons present in the dialog box and if I click on “End Process” button, Windows crashes and a blank screen is shown for 2-3 minutes. After that the Explorer starts loading and everything gets back to normal.

Sometimes the buttons can’t be clicked and I have to wait for 2-3 minutes until everything starts working again.

When all this thing is happening, nothing works. Even pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys combination doesn’t work. Also pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc doesn’t launch Task Manager. So Windows 10 hangs completely.

After this issue finishes, Windows 10 runs fine and no issue appears again but the same problem arrives again if I reboot the machine.

I’m unable to find the reason behind this annoying issue. I’m waiting for the upcoming Windows 10 feature update to install in this machine to fix the issue. Until then only waiting is the ultimate solution. As they always say “Patience is a virtue“.

  1. Hi Vishal,

Probably some exes related to telemetry is spiking the disk usage making anything unusable. I had faced similar issue long back not sure how I fixed it but pretty sure it was related to telemetry services.

  2. Hello. Please, vishall, ask him/her, where downloaded the image of Windows 10? I mean iso file.
Author, where did you get the win 10? Does the windows 10 original and not legal repack?

  3. ^^ The Windows 10 is genuine downloaded from Microsoft official website.

    @Puneet
Might be but all telemetry services and options are disabled on the machine.

  4. I have a new version of Windows 10 installed on a desktop ACER. Everything works fine except I cannot open the Calendar to setup schedules. On the start screen the mail and calendar are black. I went to the STORE, signed in, located the calendar app, it dowloads it, installs it and the the error shows up Any suggestion. Thanks you

  5. do you have a process monitor trace? Or tried windows performance toolkit? I usually have pretty good luck figuring out these sorts of issues with either of those tools

  6. 1. Disable start-up applications
    2. Run msconfig.. hide all Microsoft service. Then disable the remaining services and restart.
    3. Run Malware scan.
    4. SFC scan
    5. Check S.M.A.R.T status (might be problem with HDD)

  7. I think there are 2 solutions to it.
    1 ) Patience is a virtue
    2) Clean installation of windows.

  8. I am facing the same problem now. It has been 2 days since it started. It is very annoying. When I turn on the system it hangs. Only mouse cursor moves. Icons on taskbar do not respond. i am going for clean installation now.

  9. I am facing the same issue here, so annoying… I’ve carried out Clean installation for the 5th time now and yet problem is yet to be solved… Plz any solution to this…

  10. I’m having the same problem, but can’t find the answer properly because of commenters saying “it’s not a legal version”. The thing that some people who’ve wrote their comments here and in other sites need to get through their heads is the freezing explorer and whatnot has nothing to do with whether it’s a clean version or not. VG has already said it’s a clean version, but even with the clean cut, it still happens. So to those people, forget about asking if it’s a clean cut. It’s none of y’all businesses, it doesn’t help anyone, it’s a waste of time and y’all don’t know the other man’s situation. Just get to the answer if you have it and leave it at that.

  14. I’m getting the same thing, except I do not get any dialog box. The screen blacks out and then no response, just hardware powered on and nothing. No ability to Ctrl+Alt+Delete or end processes. Just a black screen with system powered on. This is very frustrating as you can not see what is causing the error immediately. I will go through the issue logs and see if I can find anything.
