Opera’s Hidden Secret Power User Settings Mode

Did you know older versions of Opera web browser came with a hidden secret “Power User Settings” mode which is also known as “Super user permission enabling rights” mode and “Hidden Advanced Settings” mode.

This power user settings mode provided a few advanced options in Opera Settings page which were hidden on the page by default. You can consider Opera’s power user settings mode as an Easter egg. We all love hidden Easter eggs. Right?

You can see a few extra options added to Opera Settings page and highlighted by the browser with ‘!’ mark as a part of power user settings mode.

Which Versions of Opera Contain Power User Settings Mode?

Power user settings mode was introduced in Opera 19 version. All later versions of Opera till Opera 54 came with this hidden secret mode. But Opera removed this secret mode from Opera 55 version.

Actually Opera replaced the classic Settings page in the browser with a modern material design Settings page in Opera 55 version and that’s why the hidden secret power user settings mode stopped working in newer versions of Opera.

How to Activate and Enable Power User Settings Mode in Opera?

There are 2 ways to reveal power user settings mode in Opera:

  • Using secret key sequence (known as Konami Code)
  • Using a secret direct URL

METHOD 1: Using secret key sequence (known as Konami Code)

Konami Code is a popular cheat code found in several video games. The same Konami Code is used in Opera to activate and access secret power user settings mode.

1. First of all open Opera web browser, click on Opera menu button present at the top-left corner of Opera window and then click on Settings. You can also directly open Opera Settings page by pressing ALT+P keys together.

2. When you’ll open Settings page, the cursor will be active in search box. Click on an empty area in Settings page to remove focus from the search box.

3. Now type following keys on your keyboard quickly:

Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right b a

↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a

Once you type the above mentioned keys in correct sequence, Opera will reveal the hidden secret power user settings mode.

METHOD 2: Using a secret direct URL

If you don’t want to type above mentioned key sequence or you are unable to type the keys, you can copy/paste following URL in Opera address bar:

opera:settings/powerSettingsOverlay

The above mentioned URL will directly launch the hidden secret power user settings page in Opera without using Konami Code. You can also bookmark it in your browser.

How to Use Power User Settings Mode in Opera?

As soon as you activate power user settings mode in Opera, it’ll show you following warning message:

Power user settings

Welcome!

You have enabled power user settings. Congratulations!

A brief warning before proceeding:
These settings are hidden for a reason. They can severely mess up the browser and we can take no responsibility for the stability or performance of the product after proceeding.

The message box will contain two buttons: I understand, proceed and No, thanks.

To activate and access power user settings mode, click on I understand, proceed button. If you don’t want to activate power user settings mode, you can click on No, thanks button to leave the mode.

Once you successfully activate power user settings mode in Opera, you’ll find some new options in Settings page.

For example, click on “Browser” section and scroll down and you’ll find following extra options which were not available before:

  • Delay of initial tab preview in milliseconds
  • Hide the search box in Speed Dial

These extra options show a warning (!) sign before them so that you can know these options are a part of power user settings mode.

NOTE: Once you close Settings page, the power user settings mode is deactivated and disabled. You’ll need to activate it every time you want to access it using above mentioned methods. If you want to force it to always activate automatically whenever you open Opera Settings page, enable the checkbox “Always show power user settings” given at the bottom of Settings page. Now whenever you open Opera Settings page, you’ll be able to access all power user settings mode options directly.

  1. This comment is about word processors and the Opera browser.
    1. With Opera closed, open a Wordpad document. Test the SHIFT+CTRL+Home and SHIFT+CTRL+End commands.
    2. Open the Opera browser.
    3. Go back to Wordpad. Test those two commands again.
They don’t work until you close the Opera browser.
    Very strange.

  2. I am on Opera 66, and konami does nothing, and the opera:settings/powerSettingsOverlay just brings me to the normal settings page.

SO anything i can yet do as i want google off my home page.
