Official Tool to Download Windows 8.1 Setup ISO and Create Installation Media

We know that Microsoft didn’t provide offline ISO files of Windows 8.1 operating system for public download. If you use Windows 8 and want to upgrade to Windows 8.1, you’ll need to download and install Windows 8.1 using Windows Store.

Some people want to perform a clean installation of Windows 8.1 operating system in their computers, but they can’t because there is no official place to download Windows 8.1 setup ISO files. So first they’ll need to install Windows 8 and then upgrade it to Windows 8.1 which would not be a clean installation of Windows 8.1.

But now there is no need to use any workaround as Microsoft has released a free official tool to download Windows 8.1 setup ISO and create its installation media. You can use this tool to save Windows 8.1 ISO file to your computer and then create bootable USB flash drive or bootable DVD to install Windows 8.1 in any computer.

You can download and run this tool in any Windows version but you’ll require Internet connection as it downloads full ISO file of Windows 8.1 operating system.

It allows you to select your desired language, Windows 8.1 edition and system architecture (32-bit or 64-bit).

It can be used to download following editions of Windows 8.1 OS:

  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 8.1 Pro
  • Windows 8.1 N
  • Windows 8.1 Pro N
  • Windows 8.1 Single Language

You can download 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) version of any Windows 8.1 edition according to your requirements.

Once you select the required details, it asks you whether you want to create a bootable USB flash drive of Windows 8.1 or want to save the setup ISO file of Windows 8.1 for later use.

You should select the 2nd option to save ISO file and then after downloading and saving the ISO file, you can create a bootable flash drive or burn it to a DVD using built-in Disc Burner program of Windows or any 3rd party disc burning utility.

In this way, you’ll always have a backup of Windows 8.1 setup ISO file for future use.

When you’ll try to install Windows 8.1 using bootable USB drive or DVD created with the help of this tool, you can use either Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 product key at the time of installation. Both are accepted.

PS: It seems the downloaded ISO file includes Windows 8.1 Update 1 i.e. its a slipstreamed Windows 8.1 ISO file with Update 1. That’s a good news for people who were planning to install Windows 8.1 operating system.

  1. Where can I get an ISO for 8.0 pro? You can’t upgrade from 7 to 8.1 (or W10) without losing all your programs. Going from 7 to 8.0 to 8.1 will keep your programs. Thx!

  2. @Vidyasagar Gupta I have hp Pavilion g6 2022tx laptop with pre-installed Windows 8 and I had updated it to Windows 8.1 from store and few days early I have to recover my windows 8 due to some problem. I recovered Windows 8 from recovery DVD given by hp. So I want to update to Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 update is available for me…… What do you think should I update it from store or I should download iso?? Please help me or reply me on my email address

    If you want to upgrade, then you should install Windows 8.1 using Store as it’ll take less time. But if you want to perform clean install of Windows, I’ll advise you to use ISO instead.

  6. What is meant by clear installation?? Is it means that I will only have windows… No drivers and other things that are provided by hp’s recovery DVD from which have installed Windows 8…….

  7. If I perform clear installation do I will have my personal files saved… And do I will need to install product key for Windows 8.1…… As I have buy laptop from retail shop I don’t have an product key…..

  9. ^^ I’ll advise you to upgrade using Store only because clean installation will remove everything and you’ll need product key at the time of installation. So just upgrade using Store.

  12. ^^ You can download the ISO and upgrade using it. But dont choose the clean/fresh install option otherwise it’ll format the drive.

  13. Is it necessary that I should download it on my own machine or I can use my friend’s downloaded iso who have exactly same laptop……

  15. ^^ Once you download ISO, you can use it to install Windows without Internet connection.

    You can download ISO from any computer, it’ll always be the same. But make sure you download correct edition of Windows 8.1. Regarding product key, I cant confirm as I have not used ISO to upgrade.

  25. It is not working….Language is blank and will not let me make any selections. I tried running as an administrator and that did not help at all. It still does the same thing. What can I do?

    I have 8.1 Enterprise x64 on my Dell laptop. I’ve had some strange problems with Windows Store and with an HP Printer, and after trying many obvious things I have run sfc and DISM. Both report corrupted files, and DISM wants a path to an image it can use to replace the corrupted files with good ones. I don’t see anywhere to download an 8.1 Enterprise ISO. Can I create an ISO from one of my Recovery partitions? If not, is there a way to obtain an Enterprise ISO?

  28. Every time I attempt to create the usb drive it gives the error, “We couldn’t create an installation usb drive.” I reformatted the drive, but still get the same error. any suggestions?

  29. ^^ Try to run the tool as Administrator. Right-click on the EXE file and select run as Administrator.
