How to Disable Update to the Latest Version of Windows 10 Message (Update Assistant)

SUMMARY: This tutorial will help you in disabling or removing “Update to the latest version of Windows 10” notification message shown by “Windows 10 Update Assistant” tool in Windows 10. It’ll also help you in uninstalling “Windows 10 Update Assistant” tool completely from your Windows 10 PC, so that it doesn’t upgrade your Windows 10 version to new feature update version automatically.

Sometimes when you are using a Windows 10 device, you might receive following notification message in a window:

One of the best features of Windows 10 is that it keeps getting better with every update. This PC is currently not running the latest and most secure version of Windows 10. This PC is running version 1803. The latest version is 1809.

The version number mentioned in the notification message might differ for different versions of Windows 10 such as 1507, 1511, 1607, 1703, 1709, 1803, etc.

The wizard provides a button “Update Now” to start upgrading your Windows 10 version to the latest available version. A link “Do not update now” is also given on the message window to postpone/cancel the upgrade process.

This notification message is shown by “Windows 10 Update Assistant” tool which is automatically installed by a Windows update KB4023814.

Now the same update has been released again which is automatically installing “Windows 10 Update Assistant” tool in Windows 10 computers so that all Windows 10 devices having older versions of Windows 10 can be upgraded to the latest Windows 10 feature update version.

CASE 1: How to Prevent Windows 10 Update Assistant Tool from Installing and Upgrading to Latest Windows 10 Feature Update Version?

If you have not received this notification message yet and don’t want to upgrade to newer Windows 10 feature update versions for some reasons, you can prevent the Windows 10 Update Assistant tool from installing in your computer and upgrading your computer to newer Windows 10 versions.

STEP 1:

The ZIP file also contains a restore REG file to restore default settings if you decide to upgrade to new feature updates in future.

STEP 3:

Hide the KB4023814 update using official Windows Update troubleshooter tool as mentioned in METHOD 2 of following tutorial:

Hiding the update will prevent it from installing automatically in your computer in future.

CASE 2: How to Uninstall Windows 10 Update Assistant Tool from Your Windows 10 Computer?

If “Windows 10 Update Assistant” tool has been installed in your computer by KB4023814 update and you are getting “Update to the latest version of Windows 10” notification message, you can disable or remove the message and Update Assistant tool using following methods:

STEP 1:

Open Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> View Installed Updates page and uninstall KB4023814 update.

STEP 2:

Open Command Prompt and run following command:

C:\Windows10Upgrade\Windows10UpgraderApp.exe /ForceUninstall

It’ll immediately uninstall and remove “Windows 10 Update Assistant” tool from your Windows 10 computer.

STEP 3:

Also delete following folders from your Windows 10 device:

  • C:\Windows\UpdateAssistant
  • C:\Windows10Upgrade

These 2 folders contain “Windows 10 Update Assistant” tool program files.

That’s it. Now your Windows 10 device will not be upgraded to newer Windows 10 versions automatically without your permission.

  1. Thank you so much VG. I got this notification yesterday and I did not want to upgrade to 1809 as it is having so many issues. I was afraid in updating my machine and Case 2 > Step 2 worked like a charm. No more upgrades.

  2. Have exactly the opposite situation, and searching has come up with no answer for it. Both our computers, which are up to date and certainly powerful enough to accept 1809, are still using the 1803 no matter what we do to try to update. The W.U. page tells us that we are fully up to date? Strange.

  3. To correct above, our computers are fully “powerful,” vs “up to date.” Would seem if still using the 1803 windows, they are not up to date, even if the Miscorosft page says they are. If anyone reads this and has an idea or suggestion, much appreciated.

  4. KB4023814 will not even start to install the manual update on my laptop ands it still shows the error in the Windows Update list.
