Google Toolbar Discontinued for Mozilla Firefox 5.0 and Newer Versions
In a bit of surprising move, Google has announced that they are going to discontinue Google Toolbar for Mozilla Firefox 5.0 and newer versions.
Here is what the official announcement says:
First of all, we’d like to thank all of our loyal users of Google Toolbar for Firefox. We deeply appreciate all of the feedback over the years that helped to make the product so useful. As we all know, over the past few years, there has been a tremendous amount of innovation in the browser space.

For Firefox users, many features that were once offered by Google Toolbar for Firefox are now already built right into the browser. Therefore, while Google Toolbar for Firefox works on versions up to and including Firefox 4 only, it will not be supported on Firefox 5 and future versions.
That’s true that many Google toolbar features like searchbox, spell check, etc are built into Firefox but what about other useful features like Page translation, Auto-fill, Page sharing, Gmail notifications, etc?
If you are a long time uses of Google toolbar, you are really going to miss it in Firefox.
What do you think of this move by Google? Is it a clever step to move people from Firefox to Google Chrome browser? Please post your opinion in your comment…
i really use that a lot…too bad its being removed…i dont like chrome that much
I don’t use all the time anyway, plus Firefox is not my main browser, IE9 is.
Why are they removing it? I use it a lot!
WAT???????????? :((((((( I LOVE GOOGLE TOOLBAR!!!!
*BIG facepalm*
The Google toolbar was (and maybe still is for 7,8 and 9; anyway I don’t use IE) necessary for IE 6 and under. For Firefox always has been a redundancy and waste of screen which logs browsing habits. It’s a nuisance.
Superior browsers like Firefox, Opera and SRWare Iron don’t need that kind adware installed.
Just edit install.rdf ane you will be fine 😉
I never did like the Google toolbar for Firefox or IE (when I used to use IE). So blah. Good riddings. I’m not using Chrome for toolbar that I do not like anyway.
Right when I decided to switch to Firefox…
Well, not permanently. Google Chrome Canary decided to stop working, so I’m probably going to use Firefox until tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow. Guess that’s what happens if you use an unstable version…
Anyway, I never used the Google toolbar anyway, so I won’t miss it.

I’ve been using Firefox as my default browser for 5 years, and I’ve never had the need for Google Toolbar. I don’t need it, and don’t want it.
I don’t mind anyway. Never used it and I won’t switch to Chrome. I don’t like to have my datas spread all over the world.
I never used it …. and will not use it …
Users who want to use latest(and last) version of Google Toolbar with Firefox 5 and above can install Add-on Compatibility Reporter extension for Firefox.
addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/
After installing the extension, close and open Firefox 2 times.
Totally makes sense. Toolbar’s are obsolete. In this day in age browsers we have addons and plugins that allow you do just the same as the tool bars and more. Toolbar’s where great back when we mainly had ie6/ie7 and Firefox 1 and 2. If you seriously need a tool bar. You may consider switching browsers all together.
i think so coz i did. i moved from firefox to chrome. i really miss toolbar. i just used firefox for google toolbar only.
R.I.P Google Toolbar. You won’t be missed. You happened to be just a bloated tool for FF. May you retire from IE too and please take IE with you if you can.
Sincerely,
Mushaf
Yay, no more Google Toolbar! All it did was bog down Firefox with its useless and intruding features!
Google Toolbar was useful? It was a piece of junkware. Good riddance.
See yah… Even your father disowned you for your younger brothers Chrome and Android… Haha
I am using Firefox 5 with Google toolbar. Like leomate says – edit your install.rdf file in Notepad and you are in business. The trick is locating the right install.rdf – but read the text – and change the maximum version. It was easy!
Any alternatives to the google bookmarks in the toolbar?
thnkx
The only thing I used google Toolbar for was IE, for pop-up blocking and a google search box. I stopped using it when I made the switch to Firebird/Firefox because it already had both of those
The only thing of Google toolbar that I like in Firefox & IE is traslation. But thanks to google that they didn’t ended support for Google toolbar for IE. But for other browsers, there is microsoft translater applet which you can drag to bookmarks/favorites bar!
Even firefox users can download addon named google translater and move it’s button near to its awesomebar.
