[Google Chrome Tip] Disable “Not Secure” Warning for HTTP Websites in Address Bar

The newer Google Chrome versions flag/mark HTTP only websites as non-secure. When you open a website in Google Chrome which is still using HTTP for connections, Google Chrome shows a “Not secure” warning message in the address bar as shown in following screenshot:

The “Not secure” warning notification is displayed next to the website URL and when you click on the warning message, it tells you that your connection to this site is not secure.

Actually now-a-days many websites use HTTPS for connections which provides more security to the users and Google Chrome has started showing warning messages for HTTP only websites to encourage webmasters to move their websites to HTTPS protocol.

Although if a website shows “Not secure” warning, it’s not a problem from your side but sometimes you may not want to see the warning in Google Chrome. For example, you know your favorite websites are secure but they don’t use HTTPS for connections, you may not want to see the “Not secure” label in the address bar every time you open those websites.

The good news is that Google has provided an option to disable this feature. You can disable/remove the “Not secure” warning message from the address bar.

If you also want to turn off the “Not secure” warning alert in Google Chrome address bar, following steps will help you:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in addressbar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type non-secure in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

Mark non-secure origins as non-secure
Change the UI treatment for HTTP pages – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, Android
#enable-mark-http-as

This option is set to “Default” and by default this option is enabled, that’s why you see “Not secure” warning in address bar.

3. To disable “Not secure” warning, click on the drop-down box and select “Disabled” option.

4. Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. Now try to open any HTTP website and Google Chrome will no longer display “Not secure” warning message in address bar.

BONUS TIP:

If you don’t want to disable “Not secure” warning message but want to do the opposite i.e. set it to more strict, select other options from the drop-down box such as:

  • Enabled (mark as actively dangerous)
  • Enabled (mark with a Not Secure warning)
  • Enabled (mark with a Not Secure warning and dangerous on form edits)
  • Enabled (mark with a Not Secure warning and dangerous on passwords and credit card fields)

These options will be enabled by default in future versions of Google Chrome.

  1. I will Search the Govt job and exam from my laptop but internet showing not secure option some govt site cannot open please help me am requested sir…..

  2. This no longer works. Not for me, anyways. I change it, I relaunch chrome, it reverts back to before I changed it, it’s getting irritating now, it’s happening on several devices.

  3. I have performed this disabling twice and relaunched however the “Mark non-secure origins as non-secure” ‘experiment’ I disable but the direction (“Mark…etc) is highlighted in yellow and won’t allow my disabling to go through.

I run Windows 7, desktop, HughesNet satellite service (the worst but no choice). My iPad is also now giving this message.

This ‘Not Secure’ message is recent, perhaps the last several days.

I also went into Control panes/internet options/advanced and unchecked “Warn if changing between secure and unsecure modes”
