[Fix] Your Device Isn’t Quite Ready for Feature Update to Windows 10

PROBLEM SYMPTOM:

You are using Windows 10 in your computer system and when you opened Windows Update page in Settings (WIN+I) app, it showed “This PC can’t be upgraded to Windows 10” error message as mentioned following:

Feature Update to Windows 10, version 1903

The Windows 10 May 2019 Update is on its way. We’re offering this update to compatible devices, but your device isn’t quite ready for it. Once your device is ready, you’ll see the update available on this page. There’s nothing you need to do at this time.

Following screenshot shows the error message on Windows Update page in one of our Windows 10 machines:

So you can’t upgrade to new version or feature update of Windows 10. The error message doesn’t provide any information about the problem. You are unable to find what’s wrong with your PC and why Windows 10 is displaying the error message on Windows Update page? You have no idea when will the feature update be available for your device?

PROBLEM REASON:

First of all you don’t need to worry about this error message. Sometimes a new feature update is not compatible with certain hardware, drivers or installed software in user’s computer. In such cases, if the user tries to download and install the feature update, it may cause booting problems, BSOD, crashes or performance issues after upgrade.

In past, many Windows 10 users have reported such kind of issues (like this one) to Microsoft after upgrading to newer Windows 10 versions.

That’s why, Microsoft has started showing this error message on Windows Update page so that users can learn that something in their Windows 10 computers is not compatible with newer version of Windows 10 and they should not upgrade to the new feature update at the moment.

So there is nothing wrong in your computer. It’s just the new Windows 10 feature update is not compatible with your device hardware or software.

PROBLEM SOLUTION:

The best solution of this problem is wait for some time until Microsoft fixes the incompatibility issue between your computer hardware and Windows 10 feature update. Many Windows 10 users report to Microsoft about incompatibility issues and Microsoft keeps fixing those issues regularly.

So once Microsoft fixes the issue, the error message will automatically disappear from Windows Update page and you’ll see “The next version of Windows is available with new features and security improvements” message on Windows Update page with a button/link “Download and install now” to manually start the upgrade whenever you are ready.

Other solution is to manually find and fix the culprit whether it’s a drive issue or a 3rd party software issue.

Microsoft has 2 official web pages to list known issues and resolved issues in Windows 10 May 2019 Update, version 1903. You can visit those pages at following links:

Known Issues in Windows 10 May 2019 Update, version 1903

Resolved Issues in Windows 10 May 2019 Update, version 1903

You can find whether any issue applies to your device configuration and if you find any known issue, you can fix it using the provided workaround solution.

Another known issue which can prevent upgrade to Windows 10 feature update is external USB devices, memory cards connected to the device. If an external hard disk drive (HDD), pen drive, SD card, etc is attached to your computer system and you try to upgrade to Windows 10 feature update, you may receive the above mentioned error message.

To resolve this issue, just remove all external media from your computer and restart your computer. After reboot check Windows Update page again and the error message should disappear. You’ll no longer see the error message and you’ll be able to download and install Windows 10 feature update without any problem.

  1. The error message showed up for a couple days this week.
Now it’s gone…but still no upgrade.

My second machine finally upgraded last week.

  2. So they mean “1903 isn’t quite ready for my device”, not the other way around? Gotcha.

  3. My device still says: “The Windows 10 May 2019 Update is on its way.” Today is July 15, 2019. Why am I still waiting? I hae searched and searched and this is the closest to my error I can find, but it still does not answer my question. Am I gonna be stuck on an older version of Windows 10 forever for some unknown and unspecified error? I hate Windows 10.

  4. Microsoft is releasing the feature update in phases so it’ll take time in reaching the update to all machines. Many of my Windows 10 machines have not received the update yet.

  5. How do we let Microsoft tell us what the problem is so we can either try to fix the problem or make an educated decision to override the safeguard. The list is too vague to troubleshoot. A BSOD is way different that wifi intermittently not working.

Is there an error code generated somewhere?

    “Make people smarter not dumber”.

  6. I have one desktop computer but have duel boot but on separate SSDs (two windows 10 operating systems on one computer). One is for work the other gaming. Apart from what I use them for the setup are identical but the one op (work) has updated the other (Gaming) is coming up with the above message. Go figure?

  7. I am trying to upgrade from Win 7 to 10. I have bought it, I can download it but it will not install, says my device is not ready. Looks like the problem described here, but I am not updating Win 10, I am upgrading from 7. Is it the same solution for me as described above, that is Just wait? Or?

  8. The Feature update to Windows 10 error is interesting seeing how I am using a Microsoft Surface Book. You would think their own devices would be compatible.

  9. They will be forcing hardware upgrades on people trough software incompatibility, more moneys for their buddies in the hardware businesses. They’re all in one club you know, the rich club.
