[Fix] Some Settings are Managed by Your Organization in Windows 10

PROBLEM SYMPTOM:

If you open Settings app in Windows 10 from Start Menu or using WIN+I keyboard shortcut and you navigate to some page such as Windows Update, you see following error message or warning notification at top:

Some settings are managed by your organization

Some settings are hidden or managed by your organization

The message is text only not a hyperlink, so you can’t click on it to open some web page or program to read more information about it.

You are unable to understand why this warning message is showing in Settings app? You are not connected to any domain, network or organization. You have a home computer and you are the only administrator of the computer. You are worried and afraid who is managing your computer and why? You want to know how to remove this message and how to stop the unknown organization from managing your Windows 10 device and settings. You have started panic whether your system is infected with a virus or spyware.

PROBLEM REASON:

First of all don’t panic. There is no need to worry about this message as it’s a notification only but yeah, the message text is definitely misleading and scary. It’s not any bug or issue in Windows 10. Your computer is not infected with any malware.

Don’t worry! No organization is managing your computer. It’s the default built-in message which is shown by Windows 10 when there are some kind of restrictions applied in your computer.

For example, you applied some Group Policies to disable or turn off certain features in Windows 10 such as telemetry, automatic updates, personalization, notifications, apps, etc. You might have also used Registry tweaks or scripts to disable these features.

Sometimes 3rd party software may also apply policies using Group Policy Editor or Registry Editor in your system without your knowledge.

Many times security software such as antivirus, anti-spyware, firewall or complete security suite also turn off Windows 10 features such as telemetry, etc.

So whenever Windows 10 finds that one or more policies have been applied in your computer using Group Policy or Registry, it immediately starts displaying the “Some settings are hidden or managed by your organization” message on the related Settings page.

So the message is an indication that some features or functionality are restricted or disabled in your system, nothing else.

PROBLEM SOLUTION:

If you manually applied some policies or registry tweaks in your Windows 10 computer or used a 3rd party software to disable or turn off Windows 10 features, then you don’t need to worry about this message. You can simply ignore the message.

But if you are not sure and you didn’t apply any policy or registry tweak and you didn’t use any 3rd party software to manage Windows 10 features, then you may want to get rid of this annoying error or warning message.

To disable or remove this “Some settings are managed by your organization” message from Windows 10 Settings app, you’ll need to find and delete/disable the applied policy or registry tweak.

SOLUTION 1:

1. First of all open Group Policy Editor using gpedit.msc command in RUN dialog box or search box.

2. Now click on “Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> All Settings” section. It’ll list all existing policies in your Windows 10 device.

3. Now we’ll try to find if any policy is applied/enabled in your computer. In right-side section, click on “State” column header to sort the list based on their state.

If any policy is applied in your computer, it’ll be shown on the top with “Enabled” state.

If you are not sure about the policy and you didn’t apply that policy, you can double-click on the option and it’ll open its properties window. Now select “Not Configured” option and click on Apply button.

Do the same thing with all applied policies which are showing their state as Enabled.

4. Once you reset all policies to “Not Configured” state, go to “User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> All Settings” section. Now repeat the same process mentioned in STEP 3 again. If you find any policy applied, reset it to “Not Configured“.

That’s it. Now check Settings app again and the “Some settings are managed by your organization” message will disappear from all pages. If you still see the message, restart your computer to take effects and after reboot the message will no longer display in Settings app.

BONUS TIP:

If you want to reset and remove all active group policies at once, following tutorial will help you:

SOLUTION 2:

If you can’t use gpedit.msc or you didn’t find any policy active or enabled, you’ll need to dig into Windows Registry to find the culprit registry key which is causing the message in Settings app.

There is no fixed way to find the registry key which is causing the message in Settings app. It might be a DWORD or String value somewhere lying in registry which is forcing Windows 10 to show the message in Settings app.

Most of the time, “Some settings are managed by your organization” message shows on Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update page. If you are also getting the message on Windows Update page and want to remove it, following steps will help you:

1. Open Registry Editor using regedit command in RUN dialog box or search box.

2. Now go to following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

3. If you find any key under WindowsUpdate key, delete it.

Also check in right-side pane, if you find any DWORD, String, etc, delete it.

Restart your computer and the “Some settings are managed by your organization” message will disappear from Windows Update page in Settings.

NOTE: If you see the message on Personalization pages such as Background, Colors, Lock Screen, Themes, Fonts, etc, then you’ll need to check following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization

PS: If you are getting the message on some other pages in Settings app, mention the page name and location in your comment and we’ll share the registry key related to the page so that you can delete it and get rid of the message.

  1. Hello friends, this very same message popped up right after one of the latest cumulative updates, and it’s been affecting the Privacy section for a few days now, like it’s not possible to clear activity history anymore, for instance…

  2. “some settings are hidden or managed by your organization or administrator”
this tag is showing in Privacy Settings, Notification and Action settings, Multitasking settings, Lock Screen Settings, Start settings, Sync Your Settings settings, Location settings,
Please help me in this regard. Lots of thanx.

  3. Hi dear VG, and thank you so much for answering.
Unfortunately, deleting those two folders didn’t help though, still can’t clear activity history…

  4. Hi dear VG, it’s on “Required diagnostic data”.
I tried switching to “Optional diagnostic data” but it always goes back to the first option.
    Thanks again.

  5. ^^ Are you using or used any tweaking software to modify Windows 10 privacy settings, telemetry, etc?

  6. Hi dear VG, no, I don’t think I’ve ever installed anything like that.
If it can be of any help, there’s one weird thing I noticed though: all of this started right after the installation of a Windows update called KB4598291 which, when going to “Uninstall an update”, coincidentally turns out to be the only one on the list I can’t uninstall.

  7. ^^ This update has caused several issues to many users. I’ll advise you to wait for the next update.

  8. Hi dear VG, and thanks for your kind attention and help.
OK, I’ll be waiting for the next update then.
Thanks again, and keep up the great work.

  9. Hi vg. I just wanna ask how to turn off the registry editor because it always shows up every time i open my laptop. But when i check the start up apps it doesnt there. Please help me.

  10. Please help I have the Notice “Some settings are managed by your organization in my privacy settings In privacy- General Menu And Even in Diagnostics and feedback and I am not able to change to to full PLEASE HELP!!! Provide me with Some SOLUTIONS PLEASE!!!!!!!!

  11. ^^ Check following key in regedit:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection

If you find DataCollection key, delete it.

  12. After using WPD (Windows Privacy Dashboard”, and stopping some group policies, I now get the “Padlock” at the top of the settings page saying:

“Your browser is managed by your organization”

I am trying to make a DNS change to Quad9, but now the “Use secure DNS to specify how to lookup the network address for websites” is padlocked.

    Any ideas? Thanks much!

  13. Please help
I’m getting “Some of these settings are managed by your organisation”
in Settings > Personalisation > Start (Show recently added apps)
How can I get rid of this message from the registry editor?

  14. Date & Time
At the top of the page it says, “*Some of these settings are hidden or managed by your organisation.”
Set the time automatically is set to On and greyed out.
Set the time zone automatically is set to On and can be changed.
Set the date and time manually. “Change” is greyed out.
Synchronise your clock. Time server: Local CMOS Clock. Sync now. All greyed out.
Adjust for daylight saving time automatically set to On and greyed out. Failed to work on Saturday night.

  15. ^^ Check if following keys exist in regedit:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Control Panel\International
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Control Panel\International

If exist, let me know what DWORDs are present in right-side pane.

  16. Neither of these keys exist.
I did a search and found
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\default\ ADMX_Globalization\PreventUserOverrides_1

    RegKeyPathRedirect type: REG_SZ Data: Software\Policies\Microsoft\Control Panel\International

    Also PreventUserOverrides_2

  17. ^^ What keys do you see under following keys:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\

  18. Both have a key named default, type REG_SZ, Value not set.
    Both have sub folders.
    Current user
    SystemCertificates
    Windows

    Local m/c
    Cryptography
    PeerDist
    Peernet
    SQMClient
    SystemCertificates
    TPM
    Windows
    Windows Advanced Threat Protection
    Windows Defender
    Windows NT

  19. ^^ It seems some other keys have been modified to restrict those pages. Did you try any tweaking software?

  20. Some others may have run CCleaner. Does this suggest that a rebuild of Windows 10 from scratch is needed?

  21. Going to need a full key list at this rate. I, too lack many of the sub keys in the registry. I’ve never had the blasted “Some setting are managed by your organization” from the app. After much diving into the comments, I found the keys I did need to remove and even done the Group Policy reset you linked for Abdur on Feb 05, 23. Those all resolved this issue. It would be nice though if Microsoft provided a Registry Default Viewer online for the sake of finding these registry flaws such as those DWORD’s. Overall, thanks for the help.
