[Guide] How to Upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8, Windows 7, XP and Vista?

Windows 8.1 is an update for Windows 8 and the code base of both operating systems is same, so its quite obvious that you face the same problems and issues while installing or upgrading to Windows 8.1 which were faced by many people at the time of Windows 8 installation.

I have received a few emails from various AskVG readers who are facing issues while installing Windows 8.1 and those issues are same as issues faced in Windows 8 installation.

So in this topic, we are going to list all possible issues which you can face while installing or upgrading to Windows 8.1:

PROBLEM 1: Windows 8.1 Update is Not Shown in Windows 8 Store

Windows 8 users can upgrade to Windows 8.1 by downloading and installing Windows 8.1 absolutely free through Windows Store. You just need to launch Windows Store and there you’ll see a link to install Windows 8.1 update.

But some people are unable to see Windows 8.1 update in Windows 8 Store. If you are facing this problem, check out following tutorial to fix it:

PROBLEM 4: Windows 8.1 Not Available for Online Purchase in Your Country or Region

Sorry, Windows 8.1 isn’t available for online purchase in the country/region you’re in.

PROBLEM 5: Windows 8.1 Download Failed or Getting ‘Access Denied’ Error Message

If your Windows 8.1 download failed in the middle or at the end and you were unable to install Windows 8.1 or create installation media of Windows 8.1, you’ll need to re-download Windows 8.1 using Upgrade Assistant. But if you try to re-run Upgrade Assistant, it’ll ask you to purchase Windows 8.1 again even if you have already purchased it.

Sometimes you may also get “Access Denied” error message in Upgrade Assistant.

If you are facing these problems, check out following tutorial:

How to Re-Download Windows 8 Setup Without Purchasing it Again Using Upgrade Assistant?

Check out following tutorial to fix the issue:

PROBLEM 8: Your Windows 8 Product Key Not Working in Windows 8.1 Installation

PROBLEM 9: Can’t Type @ and Other Symbols, Incorrect Character Appears

This problem is faced by Indian users mainly. When you finish Windows 8.1 installation using Upgrade Assistant and you try to type @, “” or other similar symbols in programs or login screen text box, incorrect characters appear on screen.

I turn on my tab today telling me I have no choise excep to never restart my tab that it will update to 8.1 on next restart. MS cost me an entire week of stress, and agravation. they should have to pay people for time. 9. Hello. I did the automatic update and my DELL laptop with original windows was bad. Many things have stopped working, including the Touchscreen. I could not turn off the computer anymore. I spent a lot of time, but I managed to format and return to Windows 8. My LapTop returned to normal with everything working. I was avoiding the update notice. But everything was done automatically again. And all the problems back !!!! I spent a lot of time and got to format again to Windows 8. Everything is working again. So deactivated the UPDATE for Windows 8.1. I wonder when they will make an update to correct these problems.

  10. Can this be fixed?
After repeatedly declining the 8.1 install, I’m now receiving prompts to restart my computer, or select 1, 2, or 4 hour wait before restarting, to complete the installation.
    Can anything be done?
All I can do now is shut of my computer when this complete the installation prompt appears.
    Thank you.

  11. while installing windows 8.1 pro in my c drive, it is showing a warning that ” windows cannot be installed to this disk .The selected disk has an MSR partition table. On EFI systems, windows can only be installed to GDT disks.”….please tell me a solution to overcome this problem

  12. hi,
On my Samsung New series 9 laptop (thin 13″ with SSD, very nice) I have some serious problems since update from (delivered) Win8 to Win8.1 (I was one of them they allways denied update just up to the day M$ forced the update- however- even with options set to ‘never install updates automaticly’)
    * the touch pad failes all the time and toggles wild between left and right mouseclick- it’s stressy
    * The screen is bad: before the screen was cristal clear and now some rendering is really bad – no chance to adapt it.
    * the energy management seems to be bad. before I worked up to 8h with a charged battery. now it is at most 4h, I suppose that the sleep mode is no more sleeping..
There will be probably other problems.. I cannot go back to Windows 8.0

By the way in the office the company decided to keep Windows 7 for entire 2015 because of several compatibility problems within some used soft. It is a shame..

  14. Just installed windows 8.1, having been prompted by a screen on my laptop (came with 8 and almost two years old). Now it loads up prompts for the password, can go to desk top and then gets stuck in some sort of screen loop; desk top to green screen, desk top to green screen…etc.

can reboot and maneuver quickly before something loads and then the cycle repeats… Any others with this type of issue? how can i fix without dropping back to factory settings? (as this is an option so far) but i really don’t want to lose my programs and settings just yet.

    thanks in advance,,,

    Baino

  15. My updates are set automatically. 8.1 installed but my computer crashed, it froze, the went to a black screen. My led lights come on, monitor light comes on, but then fails to boot. I have tried to get into bios, or safe mode and so far no luck. I shouldn’t have to do a Windows Repair from a USB or disc. I mean there is already 9 problems (mentioned) with the Windows 8.1 upgrade.
Windows users should be FURIOUS with this issue. We (Windows users) need to unite like the Turbo Tax users. Complain so much and boycott Microsoft products that they will take notice. And this upgrade problem is NOT new. This upgrade to 8.1 has been an issue since 8.1 came out.

  16. I need help ! When i try to install Windows 8.1 from Windows Store, it says, “application was not intalled” !!! What do i do ??!!

  18. Here is some other info
The store closes unexpectedly and restart offering the windows 8.1 update again on the left.

What i did to fix this :
    1: Downloaded and run
    support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2700567
I then tried and instead of restarting the store app it would say in yellow that the update was not installed due to 80080008

    2:Downloaded and run
    windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter
I then clicked retry and it’s now downloading.

  19. i’m on windows 8.1 pro volume licensing.

    i’m having trouble installing w8.1 updates – 2919442, 2919355, 2932046, 2959977, and so on.

the installer always returns error 0x80240004.

vg, could you help me out here?

  20. @VG:
your first method itself worked for me.
now i’m able to fire up store and download apps.

thanx for the help vg 🙂

  21. it says that it is getting my update to 8.1 ready but then it never lets me know when to actually do anything else and its been 2 weeks waiting need help soon please?

  22. In my life, I have never been this frustrated. First of all, being forced to download the most cursed thing ever, 8.1 is just plain wrong. After rebooting, I wasn’t able to do anything because the screen asked for a password I never had. But here is why I am writing. I cannot and I mean cannot use any Bluetooth speaker. I spent hours remotely with Dell technicians and they can’t get my Bluetooth speakers to work. Here was their answer. The speakers are probably broken! They aren’t because they work with other devices. Dell tech is horrid. Microsoft is horrid and obviously I’m not alone. My advice to anyone is try every possible way to avoid 8.1. It is massively flawed.

  23. I just finished installing windows 8.1 pro and after sometime, the screen went blank… I tried pressing all the buttons but no reaction

  24. When trying to install Windows 8.1 (but the same with Windows 10) it downloads correctly. But after the first restart, the system switches off at 11% of the installation
After that the system restores to Windows 8 again, showing it couldn’t update and mentions the following:
    0xC1900101 – 0x2002000C

    What can that mean?

  25. ^^ You can try alternate way by downloading and installing offline ISO file manually without using the official media creation tool.

  26. WHEN I BEGIN TO CLEAN INSTALL WINDOWS 8.1 IT Won’t LET ME FORMAT OR DELETE ANY OF MY DRIVES. SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT TO DO PLEASE HELP ME AS I WOULD VERY MUCH APPRECIATE IT.

PS. I AM USING INSTALLATION MEDIA (USB)

    LAPTOP: ASUS ROG G550JK SERIES

    THANKS

  27. every time i install windows 8 with my recovery media, screen turns out and it show unsupported
