[Fix] No Internet Access After Installing Feature Update in Windows 10

After release of Fall Creators Update for Windows 10, I started upgrading my computers to the new feature update. In some machines, I performed a clean installation for testing purposes. I also upgraded a few existing Windows 10 machines to Fall Creators Update using the official Update Assistant tool.

The upgrade process was completed successfully but after upgrading, one of my Windows 10 machines started having a weird problem.

The machine was using an Ethernet/LAN connection for Internet access but after upgrade, it started showing “No Internet Access” message on the network icon in Taskbar notification area. There was no Internet connectivity in the machine. Also an exclamation mark ‘!’ was showing inside a yellow triangle on the network icon in system tray.

First I thought that there might be some temporary problem from the ISP but I tried the same connection in other Windows 10 machines and it worked fine without any problem. So it was clear that there was some issue in the machine which started occurring after the upgrade.

Then I started troubleshooting the issue and tried several methods which are given in following tutorials:

Surprisingly none of these methods worked and I was unable to get net connectivity in that machine.

After a few hours of research, finally I was able to fix the problem by assigning IP address and DNS settings manually for the connection.

So if you also face this problem in Windows 10, try following steps to fix the issue:

1. First of all open classic Network and Sharing Center which has now become very hard to access in new Windows 10 versions. To open it, press WIN+R keys together to launch RUN dialog box and then run following command:

2. Now right-click on the connection icon which is having problem and select Properties option.

3. In connection properties window, under Networking tab, scroll down and you’ll see Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) option. Double-click on the option and it’ll open TCP/IPv4 properties window.

4. Now enable “Use the following IP address” option and type following values in the given boxes:

IP address: 192.168.1.14

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

5. Now enable “Use the following DNS server addresses” option and type following DNS server values which are Google’s public DNS:

Preferred DNS server: 8.8.8.8

Alternate DNS server: 8.8.4.4

6. Click on OK button and Windows will show a warning message “Warning – Multiple default gateways are intended to provide redundancy to a single network (such as an intranet or the Internet). They will not function properly when the gateways are on two separate, disjoint networks (such as one on your intranet and one on the Internet). Do you want to save this configuration?”. Click on Yes button.

7. At last again click on OK button and wait for a few seconds.

That’s it. You’ll get the Internet access again in your computer and the network icon will not show any exclamation mark with yellow triangle.

  1. Hi, recently my laptop will freeze randomly and the problem is System using 90%+ of the disk usage (mostly 97% or more then my laptop freeze). So I need to force reset it using power button, but this action will harm my laptop. I think the problem is Creators Update that I updated recently. I want to roll back to Anniversary Update but the roll back is gone even the update installed not more than 30 days ago. I searched many website and I can’t find a solution to roll back and can save all my data and program installed. Please help!

  2. A suggestion sir.
The IP address and Gateway varies by user to user(perhaps router to router). For example my DHCP server assigns an IPhone of 192.168.5.X where X can be anything.
Suggest giving some advice in this regard in the article.

  3. Have you actually determined the theory of probable cause? I think it could be the DHCP client service that might have failed to start. If you could test the theory to determine cause, you might want to try to see if DHCP client service is running by opening Start menu, type “Services” and then hit Enter to confirm. From there, you can press “D” in your keyboard and that will take you to the first name of the service in alphabetical order. Scroll down until you see “DHCP client” and if it’s not running, right-click the service and select “Start.”

The fix for “no Internet connection” by using static IP address is only a workaround and not an actual cause of the problem. At least the computers in the network are getting an IP address through DHCP and not assigned statically.

  4. Hey VG, after creators update 2 days ago, my wifi suddenly off, tried many things but nothing is working on another hand ethernet is from the same router is working fine. wifi driver is updated and installed but it can’t be on, whenever I turn it on it automaticlly turned of and showing option to turn on manually, after one hour and so on. please suggest what to do ? should i refresh my system or roll back to previous build?

  5. ^^ To me it seems a driver problem. Are you talking about Fall Creators Update or Creators Update?

  6. After Windows10 update to 1909 I lost internet access when starting the PC. Had to do a Re-Start after which Internet would become available. I’ve spent a couple of months looking for the answer/hack to solve this problem. Tried most of what is given above and more without success.

Came across a simple answer – TURN OFF FAST START-UP.

Its that simple -well for me and my configuration it was.

Go into the Power options of the Control Panel.

Then click – Choose what the power buttons do.

On next screen, click – Change settings that are currently not available

Remove the tick against Turn on fast start-up (recommend)

    under which is this line
This helps start your PC faster after a shut down. Restart is not affected.

Which explains why a new Start-up and Restart have different outcomes.

Why oh Why does MS hide this simple answer?
All their support forums have loads of questions on this problem – all the questions I’ve been to are locked for comment updates. So you can’t put this simple solution for people to find.

  7. Thank you a ton!!!!
I was stuck with this problem for weeks….
