[Fix] Microsoft Edge Legacy Shortcut Not Working in Windows 10 Start Menu

SUMMARY: If you restored old legacy Microsoft Edge browser after installing new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 and now Microsoft Edge Legacy shortcut present in Start Menu has stopped working and not launching old Microsoft Edge browser, this tutorial will help you in fixing the issue and make the shortcut working again.

We know there are 2 types of Microsoft Edge web browser: first the old Microsoft Edge browser which is a UWP or modern app and comes preinstalled with Windows 10 operating system. It’s exclusive to Windows 10 only. Second is the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser which is similar to Google Chrome browser and is available for download and install for Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 10 and MacOS operating systems.

There is an issue! If we install the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge web browser in Windows 10, it automatically disables and replaces old legacy Microsoft Edge browser. So users can’t open and use old Microsoft Edge browser after installing new Edge in Windows 10. New Microsoft Edge completely hides the old Edge browser in Windows 10.

  1. This does not seem to work today, if the installation of Microsoft Edge Chromium comes from Windows Update. (Note: the procedures have already been done side by side in Regedit). The Edge Legacy icon is still blank.
I tried to pin the Edge Legacy to the taskbar, but the icon is not the default, and the website icons are also blank.
I did the test on a virtual machine, installing Microsoft Edge Chromium through WIndows Update and the problem happens. If I manually install Microsoft Edge Chromium, the problem does not happen (from my tests).
Do you know if I can point to the correct Edge Legacy icon by Regedit, keeping all functionality as it was before? Or if it would be elsewhere?
Thank you very much in advance.
