[Fix] Google Chrome Automatically Signs into Browser When You Log into Gmail or Other Google Services

If you have upgraded to newer version of Google Chrome web browser which comes with new Material Design UI, you might have noticed a weird behavior of Chrome. As soon as you open Gmail or other Google services such as YouTube, Google Plus, etc and sign into your Google account, Google Chrome automatically uses your Google account information to sign into the web browser’s local user account.

In other words, if you log into Gmail or any other Google service, Google Chrome automatically signs you into the local user account present in the web browser. Google Chrome comes with multiple user account/profile feature and you can use multiple accounts or profiles to use Google Chrome. This local user account is used by Google Chrome to sync your browser data between your PC and Google servers.

Many people don’t want to use this local user account and profile feature in Google Chrome for privacy issues but as soon as they sign into Gmail or other Google services using Google Chrome, it automatically uses this info to log into local user account to sync the data.

Many people consider it as a bug but it’s a new feature of Google Chrome known as “Identity Consistency“. This new feature manages your local user account and your Google account simultaneously.

Due to this feature, if you sign into Gmail or any other Google service, Google Chrome signs you into local user account for sync functionality. If you sign out from Google account, the web browser also signs you out from local user account and vice versa.

Fortunately this new feature can be disabled using Google Chrome’s hidden secret advanced configuration page known as Chrome Flags page. If you are also frustrated by this new feature and find it annoying and want to disable this automatic signing functionality in Google Chrome, this tutorial will help you.

You just need to follow a few simple steps given below to turn off the signing link between local user account and Google account in Chrome:

1. Open Google Chrome web browser and type chrome://flags/ in addressbar and press Enter. It’ll open the advanced configuration page.

2. Now type identity in the “Search flags” box.

It’ll directly go to following option:

Identity consistency between browser and cookie jar
When enabled, the browser manages signing in and out of Google accounts. – Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, Android
#account-consistency

3. To disable the identity consistency feature, select Disabled from the drop-down box.

4. Google Chrome will ask you to restart the browser. Click on “Relaunch now” button to restart Google Chrome.

That’s it. Now you can safely sign into Gmail or other Google services and Google Chrome will never use your account information to sign you into local user account.

PS: If you want to restore the new feature, select “Default” option from the drop-down box and restart the browser.

NOTE: Google Chrome 70 and later versions come with a new built-in option in Settings page to turn on/off the sign-in link between Chrome local user account and Google account on the web. The option is labelled as “Allow Chrome sign-in” under “Privacy and Security” section and if you turn off the option, it allows you to sign into Google sites and services without signing into Chrome.

  1. This does not work. I Disabled the setting in “chrome://flags/” as described and restarted, but signing into GMail still signs me into the Browser , and signing out of Chrome also signs me out of Gmail then.

Its also doing this in Edge browser 🙁 which is now Chrome based.

  2. 6/22/19 Version 75.0.3770.100 (Official Build) (64-bit) Same here. Still signing in and signing out like Siamese twins after twiddling bits as the “solution” outlines. Once I’m in Gmail, I’m in every Google product as a subscriber. Time to go back to Firefox.
