[Fix] Chrome Showing Unwanted Article Suggestions Notifications on Mobile Phone

Yesterday when I was using my mobile phone to make a call, suddenly a notification popped up in the notification bar/status bar. When I checked the notification, it was shown by Google Chrome web browser app. The notification was actually an article suggestion kind of an advertisement. I was shocked as I was not using Chrome at that time. Also I never opened the suggested website in Chrome. So I was unable to understand why suddenly Chrome showed that notification on my mobile phone?

I cleared the notification at that time. Today again a new notification popped up and this time it was another website article suggestion shown by Chrome. After a few minutes investigation, I was able to find out the reason behind these unwanted article suggestions notifications and a way to get rid of them.

If Chrome is also showing these unnecessary article suggestions and notifications on your smartphone and you want to disable them, this article will help you.

It seems it’s a new feature of new Chrome versions as I never received these kind of notifications in past. It’s a new feature called “Content Suggestions” which allows Chrome to show suggestions and notifications about sponsored articles of 3rd party websites.

Following steps will help you in removing these extra notifications and suggestions shown by Google Chrome on your mobile phone:

1. When the notification again arrives on your mobile phone next time, tap and hold on the notification and you’ll get a direct option to allow/block content suggestions by Chrome as shown in following screenshot:

Just set the toggle button to OFF and save the changes. Now you’ll no longer receive any article suggestions notifications by Chrome.

2. If you don’t get a direct option to block these suggestions as mentioned above, try following steps:

Open Chrome, tap on 3-dots icon and select Settings option.

Now tap on Notifications option. It’ll open app notifications screen.

That’s it. Now Google Chrome will no longer show any unwanted article suggestions notifications on your mobile phone.

Have you received any article suggestion notification on your mobile phone from Chrome?

  1. I have a particular issue, where my Chrome app suggests articles – or rather “user posts” – from a specific reddit page that I NEVER visit (and in fact a political subreddit which I actually loathe and would rather not be shoved in my face, in fact the suggestions are posts on topic which completely disinterest me) it would be okay if it happened a few times but this “Suggestion” keeps popping up- every-single-day I see a new post in the feed.
I tried blacklisting the website but I can only seem to find a way to do that with the “Google” app not the “Chrome” app, the only solution to stop this is hiding all suggestions from the home page. After an update on android, I noticed they removed the content suggestion tab, in settings it’s only a list of URLs and their cookies/permission.. I’ve actually tried everything to BLOCK a specific website URL from suggestions to no avail.
