[Fix] Brightness Increases to Maximum When Opening Camera App in Android Mobile Phone

Yesterday one of my friends contacted me regarding this annoying problem. He was using a Google Android mobile phone and whenever he was opening Camera app, the screen brightness was automatically increasing to maximum 100%. As soon as he was closing the Camera app, the brightness was resetting to the customized setting.

The brightness problem was only appearing with Camera app. The Camera app was opening with maximum brightness and upon closing Camera app, the brightness was decreasing to default.

He was using the stock Camera app which came preinstalled with his mobile phone. He was not using any 3rd party Camera app downloaded from Play Store. I think it was stock Google Camera (GCam) app which came bundled with his smartphone.

He already checked the auto-brightness (or adaptive brightness) feature in his mobile phone settings and it was already off. It was very frustrating for him to use Camera app in full brightness as he uses his mobile phone in very little brightness mode. It was hurting his eyes and the battery was draining faster and his cell phone was heating up quickly. He wanted to get the same brightness level in Camera app which was set in his mobile phone.

When he was unable to fix the issue, he contacted me and I started investigating the issue. I checked all Camera app settings and I couldn’t find any built-in option to disable or turn off automatic or maximum brightness feature.

I was 100% sure that the issue was related to Maximum Brightness feature. Actually some Camera apps in mobile phones allow users to enable maximum brightness feature which always opens the Camera app in maximum brightness mode. It’s done so that the mobile phone user can see all details in the subject clearly while using Camera app.

Somehow the maximum brightness feature got activated in my friend’s mobile phone. I asked him and he told me that he gave the mobile phone to his 9 months old son and he was touching the screen here and there and several apps were opening and closing randomly. I immediately understood that his son touched some area in Camera app and some gesture enabled maximum brightness feature in Camera app. Now I just needed to find out the correct gesture which enabled the maximum brightness mode in Camera app.

Finally after some trial and error, I was able to fix the irritating issue.

It was the Flip icon showing at the bottom-left corner in Camera app which is used to switch between front/selfie and rear camera view. If you tap and hold on this icon, it automatically turns on/off maximum brightness feature in Camera app.

When you tap and hold on the icon first time, it enables the maximum brightness mode and you get “The maximum brightness is set, restart the application!” message. If you launch the Camera app next time, it opens in maximum brightness mode.

If you again tap and hold on the icon, it disables the maximum brightness mode and you get “The maximum brightness is disabled, restart the application!” message. If you launch the Camera app next time, it opens in default and normal brightness mode.

So if you are also facing this issue in Camera app in any Android smartphone, tap and hold on the flip icon which is used to switch between front and rear camera and it’ll immediately disable maximum brightness mode in your Camera app. Close and restart Camera app to apply changes.

Now you’ll be able to use Camera app in default and custom brightness settings.
