[Fix] App Switching Issue While Typing on Keyboard in iPhone

If you use Apple iPhone and whenever you start typing inside any app such as Messages, WhatsApp, etc, your iPhone automatically brings App Switcher on your screen or switches to another running app automatically, this article will help you in fixing this annoying issue.

iPhone Users Complaining about Annoying Typing and App Switching Issue

Many iPhone users have complained about this weird issue on Apple’s official community and Reddit forums. The problem starts occurring when the user starts typing on keyboard in an app. As soon as the user types a few characters using the keyboard, iPhone incorrectly detects a swipe on the bottom edge which is used to access App Switcher screen to navigate between all recent or running apps.

Since the user was typing inside an app and iPhone automatically displays App Switching screen, the next keypress selects an app currently focused on App Switcher and iPhone brings the selected app on full screen. Thus the user is forcefully moved to a different app by the iPhone and it becomes very frustrating for the user.

Many iPhone users have reported this bug on official Apple community and other online forums. This typing issue seems present in iOS 17 version and affects all iPhone models such as iPhone XS, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. In fact the latest iOS 17.1.2 and all previous iOS 17.1.x and 17.x versions contain this bug.

Here are a few comments posted by iPhone users on official Apple community regarding this annoying bug:

Kazrich77: Since doing the iOS 17 update no matter where I am typing a message. Text, Instagram, WhatsApp, or even making a note in notes, my phone will randomly close the window I am typing in and opening another of my opened app tabs. While typing this message, it opened text messages and Instagram. I don’t know which setting to even try fixing. Even if I swipe all my open apps closed it will open one. Never happened before this update.

Jim C: I’m having the same issue – the phone thinks I’m trying to switch apps when I’m just typing. I’m installing 17.1.1 right now to see if it stops. It’s making my phone extremely frustrating to use. (iPhone 15 Pro Max)

Oxydatboi: iPhone 14 Max Pro is doing it too. 17.1.2 did not fix it. Very annoying and it seems like Apple doesn’t care about it while they only focus on security type things. Not complaining, just saying they have priorities.

hugoisangry: I’m also getting this on iPhone 13 on 17.1.1. when typing, the iPhone is picking up touches near the edge of the screen sometimes as swipes, to go to the app selector screen.

[Reason] Reachability Feature in iPhone Causing Typing and App Switching Issue

This bug is somehow related to “Reachability” feature present in iPhone. A user “FoxArcane” on Reddit forums shared the bug and working solution. According to the user, if we turn off reachability feature in iPhone, it resolves the typing issue and iPhone stops displaying App Switcher screen incorrectly when the user is typing in apps.

Reachability feature is actually a special feature provided by Apple which allows iPhone users to access the top of the screen using single hand. If the user is using an iPhone with large display and want to access all options with one hand, he can swipe down on the bottom edge of the screen to enable Reachability feature.

[Solution] Disabling Reachability Option Fixes Typing and App Switching Issue in iPhone

Apple might be investigating the issue and it might take some time in releasing a new iOS version to fix this typing bug but in the mean time, we can use a workaround to fix the issue immediately.

If you are also facing this bug in your iPhone and want to fix it, following steps will help you in getting rid of this annoying issue in your iPhone:

STEP 1: Open Settings app in your iPhone, scroll down a little and tap on Accessibility option.

STEP 2: On next screen, tap on Touch option given under physical and motor section.

STEP 3: On next screen, look for Reachability option which is turned on by default. Tap on Reachability option to turn it OFF.

That’s it. Once you disable or turn off reachability option, your iPhone will stop showing App Switcher screen automatically.

Once Apple releases a new iOS version to fix the issue, you can re-enable reachability option using Settings app.
