Fix Add-ons Disabled Problem in Mozilla Firefox (47-65) Older Versions

SUMMARY: If you are using an older version of Mozilla Firefox web browser and all your installed add-ons/extensions got disabled and you are unable to install new extensions, this article will help you in fixing the issue.

Since May 03, 2019, Several Mozilla Firefox users are facing a very annoying and weird problem. Suddenly all existing/installed add-ons (e.g. extensions, themes, dictionaries, language packs) in their Firefox browser got disabled automatically and they were unable to enable them again. Also users were not able to install new extensions in their browser.

It doesn’t matter what Firefox version are you using, whether it’s an old version of Firefox, latest version of Firefox or a testing version of Firefox (e.g. Nightly), all Firefox versions were having this irritating problem.

Firefox users were getting lots of error messages while enabling or installing add-ons/extensions. Some of them are as following:

  • One or more installed add-ons cannot to be verified and have been disabled.
  • The add-on could not be verified for use in Firefox and has been disabled.
  • Download failed. Please check your connection.
  • The add-on could not be downloaded because of a connection failure.
  • The add-on downloaded from this site could not be installed because it appears to be corrupt.

This issue occurred due to an expired security certificate which is used by Firefox to check and verify add-ons. Since the certificate expired, it prevented all existing add-ons from running in browser and new add-ons from being installed in browser.

When this issue occurred, we immediately shared workarounds and solutions to fix this issue and re-enable disabled add-ons and forcefully install new add-ons in Firefox in following tutorial:

Later Mozilla team released official updates for the latest Firefox version 66 to fix disabled add-ons issue. People using latest Firefox 66.0 version were automatically upgraded to newer version including the fix for add-ons disabled issue.

But there are many users who are still using older versions of Firefox. Some people find newer versions of Firefox slower and prefer to use older versions. Some people use older versions of Firefox because their favorite extensions no longer work in newer Firefox versions. There are many extensions which are not compatible with newer versions of Firefox. Also several features (such as live bookmarks) have been removed from Firefox newer versions and many people who still want to use those deprecated features, are forced to use older versions of Firefox.

People using older versions of Firefox were out of luck and were still facing add-ons disabled problem and were unable to install new add-ons in their web browser.

The add-on is called “Disabled Add-on Fix for Firefox” and is available for download at official Firefox add-ons web page.

Don’t worry! You’ll not face any problem in installing this official add-on and once you download and install this add-on, it’ll immediately enable all disabled add-ons and you’ll be able to install new add-ons without any problem.

  1. Any trick to use older addons with Firefox 66. i particularly like Speed dial from older version that is not suitable now.

  2. Hi VG. I hope so much that you can help me as I’ve spent hours trying to find help online. I have Firefox 56 and need the fix you’re talking about. I’ve gone to the site you linked (like so many others have), and the page comes up saying how it’ll fix it, but THERE IS NO DOWNLOAD BUTTON TO GET THE EXTENSION. It only discusses the extension, and that’s it. Am I blind?
I honestly feel like I’m going out of my mind, this has been so frustrating. Please, please see this and tell me how to get that extension downloaded. Maybe you could email me a little picture of the download button that I’m obviously not seeing??? I’m so sorry to bother you, but oh, I need a little miracle that I hope you can give me! Thank you!

  3. hello i am using a really OLD verson it is 47.0.2 i use this because any thing newer will not allow me to do the work i do. that being said, i tried to insert a screenshot of the extension-add on feature and cannot insert the screenshot but what is says is this:
SOME EXTENSIONS COULD NOT BE VERIFIED
” ADD ON UPDATE SECURITY CHECKING IS DISABLED YOU MAY BE COMPROMISED BY UPDATES.” enable

I did what was suggested in your article in regards to the article entitled:

How to Install Incompatible (Unsupported) Extensions in Mozilla Firefox Newer Versions?

    did i do something wrong???

  4. Hi VG,

all links above for disabled-add-on-fix are dead.
You may provide a link to fix-52-56 where else?

    Take care
    Michael

  5. Cheers for the response but what “issue was resolved by Mozilla team” and where?!

Go to addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noflash/ and try for yourself.

    Just for the books:

Mozilla disabled excellent addons from 56 onwards despite them on the market for more than a decade. But it still offers them to download them to pull users legs i.e. “appears corrupt” on install. It also disabled the ‘about:config xpinstall.signatures.required’ false option in earlier versions after they became aware off that pathway.

It does never answer even experts on that issue but strikes them dead with “update”. Classic catch 22, the addon will not work than either.

What rude names does such behavior deserve in a pub chat?

Which software anyway ever went up to version 86 now, almost thousand version counting the alleged security updates in between?

Mozilla became bloatware, calls home, treats users like i**ts and will be hopefully dead one day.

Me uses still FF 55.0.3, in- and outbound firewall protected. It works fine.

Evens so, I miss the good old honest Netscape for which I hate Microsoft for because it killed it due to its illegal OS-embedded IE browser.

    Take care.
