Enable and Test the Upcoming New Tab Page Designs in Firefox Right Now
Mozilla is working on redesigning the New Tab Page (NTP) or homepage layout in Firefox web browser. The new redesigned new tab page will be enabled for all users in upcoming versions of Firefox. This article will help you in enabling and testing the new redesigned new tab page right now in your web browser.
Mozilla has decided to make some UI changes to the New Tab page layout in Firefox web browser. The new tab page is the page which is displayed when you open a new tab in your web browser. The same page is also shown when opening the web browser or accessing the homepage.
The new redesigned new tab page will be activated and enabled for public in future versions of Firefox web browser but the good news is that Mozilla has already implemented the redesigned new tab page in the latest stable version of Firefox i.e. 131.0 version.
There are 2 variants of redesigned new tab page available for testing in Firefox. Following screenshots show both variants enabled in our Firefox web browser:
Redesign variant ‘a’ of the New Tab page layout in Firefox web browser:

In design ‘a’, Mozilla has reduced the spacing and padding between New Tab page elements such as Firefox logo, search box and also decreased the size of the recently visited websites thumbnail icons. The recommended stories are now displayed in 4 columns when the web browser is maximized.
Redesign variant ‘b’ of the New Tab page layout in Firefox web browser:

Design ‘b’ contains all the above mentioned enhancements along with following extra changes: the Firefox logo has been moved to the left side of the new tab page. The weather information has been moved to the right side of the page. Also the new tab page Settings (cog wheel) icon has been moved to the bottom-right corner of the new tab page.
Mozilla has provided a hidden secret preference/flag to early test drive the upcoming New Tab page redesigns in Firefox web browser. Interested users can modify these preferences to activate and enable both variants of new tab page redesigns in their web browser right now.
If you also want to enable and test the upcoming redesigned New Tab page in your Firefox web browser, following steps will help you:
STEP 1: Open Mozilla Firefox and type about:config in the address bar and press Enter. It’ll show you a warning message, click on “Accept the Risk and Continue” button. It’ll open Firefox’s hidden secret advanced configuration page i.e. about:config page.
STEP 2: Now type newtabLayout inside the preference search box and look for following preferences:
browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.newtabLayouts.variant-a
browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.newtabLayouts.variant-b
STEP 3: These preferences are set to false by default which means the new upcoming designs of New Tab page are disabled in Firefox.
To activate and enable the upcoming redesigned New Tab page in Firefox, set any of the above mentioned preferences to True at a time. Double-click on the preference and it’ll change its value to True. Alternatively, you can click on the Toggle icon given next to the preference name to modify it.

It’ll immediately activate and enable the new test design on the new tab page in your web browser. Open a new tab page by pressing Ctrl+T keys together or by clicking on the new tab button in tab bar and you’ll see the new redesigned page layout.
PS: In future, if you decide to deactivate and disable the new redesign and restore default New Tab page layout in your Firefox browser, set the above mentioned preferences to False again.
