Download “Windows Defender Browser Protection” Extension for Google Chrome

Almost all web browsers come with built-in security mechanisms such as phishing/deceptive websites protection, malware protection, etc. Google Chrome also comes with built-in protection feature to protect from dangerous websites.

If you want more protection against phishing websites and other online threats, you can try a new extension released by Microsoft for Google Chrome web browser.

Microsoft has released a new extension “Windows Defender Browser Protection” for Google Chrome which protects from online threats. It brings Microsoft Edge web browser’s protection feature to Google Chrome.

According to Microsoft, this extension protects Chrome users against online threats, like phishing and malicious websites, with real-time protection from Microsoft.

Windows Defender Browser Protection extension checks for various threats such as links in phishing emails and websites designed to trick you into downloading and installing malicious software that can harm your computer.

If you click a malicious link in an email or navigate to a site designed to trick you into disclosing financial, personal or other sensitive information, or a website that hosts malware, Windows Defender Browser Protection will check it against a constantly updated list of malicious URLs known to Microsoft.

If the malicious link matches one on the list, Windows Defender Browser Protection will show a red warning screen letting you know that the web page you are about to visit is known to be harmful, giving you a clear path back to safety with one click.

The list of reported malicious URLs is regularly updated by Microsoft so that users can get complete protection from dangerous websites.

The extension icon in the toolbar changes if it finds a malicious website. You can click on the toolbar icon to enable/disable the web page monitoring and protection feature.

I checked for a few websites and if the phishing website was caught by Chrome’s built-in phishing protection feature, Chrome blocked it. But sometimes Chrome didn’t detect the harmful website and that time this new extension came to rescue.

So by installing this extension, you’ll get double protection and the best thing is that this extension doesn’t disable or overwrite Chrome’s protection feature. Both remain functional.

  1. Great article VG! I’m wondering if MS has plans to deploy a Firefox equivalent of this add-on. Any thoughts?

    Cheers.

  2. I wish that Microsoft would release the Windows Defender Browser Protection extension for Firefox and for Opera.

  3. Hi VG

I’m on 1709. And in my Windows Defender I have disabled, cloud protection and sample submission. But WD after every restarts, places a exclamation mark on WD tray icon requiring me to either enable them or dismiss them(the notification). Any way, to have it done(dismissed) permanently?

    Thanks
