[Software Update] Download Microsoft PowerToys 0.80.1 for Windows 10 and Windows 11

UPDATE: New PowerToys version 0.80.1 available for Windows 10 and Windows 11 which comes with various improvements, minor changes and bug fixes.

If you have used or still using Windows 95 or Windows XP operating systems in some of your older computers, you might be very well aware of PowerToys programs. PowerToys were very useful and free tools/utilities released by Microsoft for Windows 95 and Windows XP operating systems. Microsoft released PowerToys to enhance Windows 95/XP functionality and add new interesting features to the OS.

The best and most popular PowerToy released for Windows 95 and XP was TweakUI. It was an excellent portable tool for Windows which allowed tweaking and customizing Windows appearance (UI) and functionality. You can consider TweakUI as an amazing tweaking tool for Windows OS. No existing tweaking utility can match the good ol’ TweakUI tool.

Microsoft also released various other PowerToys for Windows 95 and XP. Some of them are Winter Fun Wallpaper Changer, Image Resizer, Clear Type Tuner, Calculator Plus, Virtual Desktop Manager, ISO Image Burner, etc.

Surprisingly many of these PowerToys also work in Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems.

Unfortunately Microsoft discontinued PowerToys long time back and none of them works in Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems. Now there is a good news for Windows 10 and Windows 11 users.

Microsoft has started working on new PowerToys set for Windows 10 and Windows 11 and the company has released official PowerToys set to public.

  1. You rave about TweakUI, as well you should. It was by far the most useful program of the old PowerToys. I daresay, I found it indispensable. Yet you do not comment as to whether or not TweakUI (or a comparable program) will be developed for the new PowerToys. Do you have any information regarding this? Will there be a new Windows 10 version of TweakUI?

  2. ^^ Currently there is no news about TweakUI for Windows 10. Only the 4 programs mentioned at the end of the article are under development.

  3. Hello sir VG,
I am using Windows 10 May Update 2019 64 Bit in my Acer Laptop E5-511, I am facing a problem, when I trying to open Settings>Apps, then Settings is crashing. How to fix Settings crash issue?

  4. ^^ If it started happening recently, it might be due to some updates or installing 3rd party software. Did you install any software or Windows updates?

  5. I completely disabled Windows Automatic Update according to your provided instructions. I installed many 3rd party software, and generally everyone installs 3rd party software to power-ups their works.
May be this problem related from hardware because my Laptop running with Pentium 4 processor and 2GB DDR3 RAM, but I am not sure because some system software and 3rd party software running properly, even other options of setting is opening, not crashing.

  6. ^^ Then it might be a bug in the feature update. There are many known issues similar to yours in May update.

  7. I cannot get the power toys to work on my Windows 10 systems that I use for work. I use them as images for Citrix.. I need to make a number of configuration changes to the OS. This would work great, but I cannot get the security settings off to allow the program to run.

    Any suggestions would help. Thanks!

    Jim Speed

  8. What I really miss about TweakUI is the drilling down in the context menu on the dektop. .

I wonder why Microsoft simply wants to make life difficult for the users.

  9. Hello VG, It’s been quite a while using Windows 10 with all the updates provided. So I decided to download and install a fresh copy of windows 10.
I two days ago (06.05.2020) did a fresh install of Windows 10 version 1909 (OS Build 18363.778).
What I noticed on this Windows 10 version in Task Manager processes is “User OOBE Broker”
When I right right clicked on it and selected properties, it’s linked in a directory “C:\Windows\System32\oobe:
Since using Windows 10 in the past, I’ve never seen that process before.

The only thing that I can remember doing different on this copy of Windows 10 is enabling the Windows Sandbox to test out different apps etc.

I’d like if you can give me some info or look into this as to why that process is now in Task Manager!

I mentioned in a previous article on this same website under your topic of Windows Sandbox, I said that I used VMware Workstation. However I decided not to use VMware and enable Windows Sandbox instead for more convenience.
    Thanks in advance.

  10. I’ve install .NET Core and the program is still unable to run. its still asking me to download .NET core

  11. Since updating my laptop to Microsoft’s Feature update (1) v 2004 the System Protection tab within System Properties does not show, so it is not possible to use Restore or Create a Restore Point.

i have taken a screen shot of the scenario showing before and after 2004 installation and i would like to send these results to you, if u would allow me to do so.

    Best regards, Lionel Leek

  12. I have used Power Toy from way back in pre 95 times. I loved it then and I will now. Thank you for a great program.

  13. How does “Power Toys” relate to %SystemRoot%\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe which came with W10Pro on my 64b machine?

  14. ^^ PowerShell and PowerToys are 2 different programs. PowerShell is a console app which comes bundled with Windows.
